The Wii U Gamepad might not matter in the long run

EDITOR'S NOTEfrom Eduardo Moutinho

I think the Nintendo Wii U Gamepad is one of those unique peripherals that will take some time to find its place. Let's wait until we have a few months with the controller-slash-tablet, along with some games that use its features, before we come to a verdict on its success.

Wii U Gamepad

The focal point of the Nintendo Wii U is the second-screen Gamepad. Like with the Wii Remote, Nintendo hopes this new control interface will be a gateway to unique experiences for new users. But where Nintendo bet the farm, so to speak, on the Wii-mote, its controller concepts for the Wii U are all over the place.

Let's take a look at what the Wii U Gamepad is and how Nintendo is positioning it. The most obvious use for the second screen is as a map. Pikmin 3 will contain such a feature, so players can survey the landscape and keep track of others. Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition uses the Gamepad for actions like controlling the batarang. ZombiU will use it to scan the environment and for other inputs like punching in a key code. And Nintendo Land will use it for asynchronous gameplay.

Another interesting move is that titles can be played while the TV is off or on another channel through the screen on the Gamepad.

Those are all well and good, but none are particularly exciting options. Where the message starts to become mixed is with the Wii U Pro Controller.

The Pro has been compared to its Xbox 360 counterpart. The similarities are easy to notice, but just think of it as a "normal" controller. And by normal I mean it does not have a second screen. Nintendo is finally giving gamers what they wanted out of the Classic Controller on the Wii that was never delivered on. The Pro will not come bundled with the console, but I suspect it taking on a lot of early adopters.

Wii U controllers

Developers plan every feature of a game from the start. Second-screen gameplay for the Wii U will be no different. Time is money and more time spent on the Gamepad means an increased budget. Early Wii U games will be mostly ports from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. With the Wii U's negligible install base, resources might just not be there to create compelling features. With two other control options that parody those of competing consoles, developers might not take a risk and just fall back on these more-conventional alternatives.

Before long, second-screen features might become irrelevant.

Where does this leave the Wii U as a platform? With new hardware from Microsoft and Sony coming soon, what becomes Nintendo's selling point? Well, I can't answer that for sure.

But I have had some opinions on the company that were not changed by this news.

Great read, I wrote an article on the Wii U's controller as well. In my opinion, I feel that gameplay revolving around the use of a controller, is getting a little tiring. I go back to my Wii sometimes to play Smash and as I'm playing I just think to myself "I don't want to do this anymore". I mean, we haven't seen exactly how the controller will function with other games so I will hold back my doubt for a little longer, but I think Nintendo made a huge mistake with this. The controller isn't as simple, pick-up and play like minded as the Wii controller was so that will push away the "parents" side of the market, and for hardcore gamers we have other, arguably better, gateways into hardcore gaming in the PS3 and Xbox. I just have a hard time seeing who exactly this is for, only time will tell I guess.

"With the Wii U's negligible install base"  This system isn't yet released so this statement and everything built on it has no factual merit whatsoever.  I agree Nintendo's marketing seems to be all over the place, but if there's anything I've learned from Nintendo, it's not to count them out.  You're right in that I don't think this system will have the runaway success of the Wii, but I believe it will be successful in the long run and produce several unique and amazing experiences over it's lifetime (mostly from Nintendo themselves).  Kind of like the Gamecube.  Ultimatly 3rd place, but by no means a failure.

When in the first year of the Wii U its install base will be less than the PS3 and Xbox 360. That's a fact.

I would have said don't count Nintendo out too but then E3 happened. I was one of the few completely behind Nintendo for the original DS and even the Wii. I had no idea what to expect but I was excited. With the Wii U I know what to expect and it is not very exciting.

I plan on getting a Wii U at launch for Pikmin 3 and Rayman: Legends. So as much as I think it would be awesome for the gamepad to be a true selling point for the console I really can't see a future where it is based on what we have seen so far.

"But I have had some opinions on the company that were not changed by this news."

Yeah and most people are reaming you for that ridiculous opinion........

Nintendo is the number 1 game company on the planet....

The 3ds has been number 1 in the world for over a full year now........

The wii u will sell out based on the strength of the strongest launch lineup a nintendo system has ever had

Oh, you're right now I see. Nintendo 'is' number 1. Makes perfect sense.

the 3ds since last june has been the top selling system worldwide, by not even a close margin

That is great but Nintendo has posted a big loss last quarter and the Xbox 360 has been outselling the Wii for months. Trust me, I want the Wii U to succeed and I will be buying one. Three awesome consoles are better than 1 or 2. But the writing is on the walls for Nintendo and they are not reading it.

Let me break it down again

nintendo 1 year of loss, microsoft, over 5 in there history, they will be profitable this year based on stong wii u expected sales and strong 3ds current sales

wii is getting replaced with wii u, so wii sales would decrease, they handed first place over.

The wii had some of the biggest third party titles of the gen. This august, the wii probably gets the most important in DQ X

Is the wind blowing? I love it how some people accuse other of trolling, and then go right into generalizing, assuming, and then actually trolling a system.

I would never do such a thing. I love all systems

Haha, again there you go with saying things without backing any of it up. Wii having the best third party titles this gen is the most ridiculous thing you have said. This has no longer become a conversation after that, goodbye troll.

The difference between Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo is that Nintendo 'is' their games division and that is it. If the Xbox struggles it can coast on the profits of Microsoft as a whole for a long time. Same with Sony and the PlayStation division, althought not too much lately.

If the Wii U fails that could spell disaster for Nintendo.

My article is obviously an educated guess. Nintendo has proven that they can create a hit. But the lack of support for the 3DS and the seemingly poor support for the Wii U and the general lack of enthusiasm shows pretty clearly that they are slipping. But I would be the first person to jump for joy if they can turn this around.

I will reply one last time.

If xbox struggles, thats even worse because it means multiple dvisions arent pulling weight, and its much harder to fix.

Sony cant coast either

There was a study recently.

If each of the big 3 had losses each year. How long would they last?

Sony would last till 2020, Microsoft till 2030. And nintendo till 2075.

Nintendo has never had a system that wasnt first or second in profit at sonme point. They dont know how to fail. The wii u wont fail

Lack of support for the 3ds?

Not only is it out pacing the ds in sales, its outpacing it in games up to this point too.......

Lack of support........are you kidding me? Namco, capcom, square, konami, atlus, epic mickey, and more for this year? its non stop support which is why its number 1

The wii u seems to have the best launch linup in nintnedo history, which would mean it has good support.

"Lack of general enthusiasm"? dont let the minority of loud internet haters cloud you. Most people think its awesome and is going to do well

Shane from game trailers is one of those people.....

They dont need to turn anything around as the number 1 right now

No problem with you either. You bring up some good points.

But in my heart of hearts I believe that Nintendo is going to fail. I even think there won't be a new console after the Wii U. Truly not trying to start a new conversation so lets say we reconvene here in a few years and see how this all shakes out?

And in my heart of hearts nintendo goes through this with every system and people eventually have to swallow crow
