Mobcast Episode 23

Area 5's Matt Chandronait joins Bitmob's Dan Hsu, Aaron Thomas, and Michael Donahoe on the latest and greatest episode of the Mobcast.

The gang discuss how ready (or not ready) they are for the next generation of consoles; try to figure out why co-op play frequently stinks; talk about the lack of news from TGS; debate whether or not reviewers have enough time to play games; and ponder if it's easier to make a funny game or a scary game.

Hey! Do you remember how we asked for your help coming up with a Mobcast theme song? Well, we had a little "issue" and we need you to resubmit those songs again. If you didn't submit anything the first time, you're welcome to send in an awesome tune this round if you're so inclined. Read this story for more details. Sorry about that!

I gave the last topic some thought, and I finally thought of a good game that is funny with almost no dialogue: 'Splosion Man. The game simply had a quirky humor to it: from the short, well-animated cut scenes, the personalities of 'Splosion Man and the enemies/bosses (and the literal meat that they're apparently made out of), to the silly donut song that plays during interactions with the fat scientists. I also laughed out loud at the completely random cut-scene during the final boss fight. Not many developers can make a game genuinely amusing, much less one that has almost no dialogue. And while fairly immature to my standards of humor today, I would also laud Rare for their successful attempts to stir up some laughs between the Banjo-Kazooie series and Conker. While a majority of it is pretty low-brow potty humor, they would occasionally throw in a joke here and there for the older folks to pick up on. I can't say I've played that many scary games, as the horror genre has never piqued my interest in any medium. I'd prefer to altogether avoid the "closet monster" scare genre. I do, however, enjoy the dank, gloomy atmosphere type of scare, something similar to BioShock. I felt some serious chills going through the Medical Pavilion (I scare easily in video games/movies).

@Bryan Excellent choices for funny games! I have to totally agree and glad you mentioned both 'Splosion Man and Banjo-Kazooie. I really do think it is fairly difficult to make a game that is genuinely funny, but there have been a few that would make most people chuckle. Another one that I was surprised wasn't mentioned during the Burtal Legend talk is Psychonauts. Also, a few games manage to get some laughs when they break the 4th wall properly Oh, and big thanks for the HUGE shout-out for Pixel Revolt!

I think Co-op play frequently stinks because there is no real incentive for others to play. Games like Halo and Resistance: Fall of Man lazily tack-on co-op play, and simply make the second player a copy of the first player (i.e. two Master Chiefs or two Nathan Hales). Also, most games aren't meant for co-op, and they still have it. I mean, these types of games are better off enjoyed by yourself, either because it makes the said game too easy or it clearly just doesn't work. Again, Halo is better enjoyed by yourself in my opinion, because it makes the campaign modes far too easy, and I find myself usually side-tracked from the actual campaign experience because me and my friend are fooling around.

Nice work with the podcast guys! I'll be making a point to check it out on a regular basis. I appreciate that you all introduce topics that lead to actual discussions instead of simply talking about what games you've been playing this week, (not that there's anything terribly wrong with that). In regards to one of the shows topics, count me in as someone who has no interest in buying another console any time soon. I'm not even sure what a next-gen machine could bring to the table that would peak my interest. Better graphics? I'm happy with what we have now. 3-D? Conceptually a cool idea, but I wouldn't be willing to shell out a zillion dollars for a new TV when I just upgraded to HD a year ago. What else is there? More social networking options? Not my thing. I could go on and on.
