New Addition and Help Wanted

Please welcome Mitch Dyer as a writer on the Bitmob staff. A freelancer for multiple publications – his bio says “almost every online and print outlet on the market” -- expect Mitch to contribute a couple of pieces each week. We hope you enjoy reading his material just as much as we do.

To learn a little more about Mitch, read some of his pieces from his Bitmob tryout on Alan Wake, developer commentaries, and hypocrisy in advertising. As a member of the Bitmob community, he recently wrote a well-received piece on the role of video-game journalists.

But Mitch won't be the final addition to the Bitmob staff. The next could be you.

We’re looking for another person to join the staff. The search this time focuses on your published work, either here at Bitmob or articles/blogs on other magazines or sites. Please send me three writing samples that are good representations of your work (note: articles the Bitmob editors have edited and promoted to the front page aren’t eligible unless you submit the version as it stood before we edited it). If you send files, please send them in rich-text format. Candidates will also take an editing test in the second phase.

Please send your submissions to jason.wilson@bitmob.com. The deadline is noon Monday, Aug. 9. Note: This is an unpaid position at this time.

Additional notes from Shoe:

While we know these are not as good as getting regular checks, we can offer you:

  • Increased exposure in the industry
  • Access to press events (from a preview event to E3)...especially if you live near San Francisco, CA
  • An occasional free game (to cover), sometimes before it's released to the public
  • Opportunities to get paid freelance work via our partnership with EGM
  • Direct feedback on your writing and editing from experienced editors

Congratulations, Mitch! Looking forward to reading more of your work.

Jason, will sexy pictures of Lance Darnell help persuade your decision?

Congratulation Mitch! Looking forward to seeing more of your writing :) I would apply for the next position, but uni takes up a lot of my time, so maybe you'll have more positions once i'm done with uni, and ready to move into the scary realm of employment :)

Intriguing, but I would fail the editing test.

Congratulations, Mitch!

Jason: Is someone leaving Bitmob, or are you guys just looking to expand your staff?

@Nick You may have noticed that Omar isn't publishing as much -- he's working with a newspaper now, too! And Andrew Hiscock has something really cool (outside gaming) going on. So, really, we're making up what they would usually contribute.

@Lance Your pics would be too sexy for my inbox to handle.

I have a couple of questions.

1. Would you have to live near the Bitmob offices? I ask since, I'm Canadian.

2. What kind of content would we have to produce on a regular basis? Editorial? News? Reviews? Interviews?

Oh wait. I have a third question.... Um. I'm not quite sure how to ask this but... does it pay?

It's not the most pressing issue on my mind or anything but I'm curious.

Ryan: I'm in Alberta. The Canadian thing, while a natural handicap in simply interacting with Americans, didn't hurt me at all. :)

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I'm crazy-excited to work with Bitmob, and I hope I can ramble about things you might find interesting!

Damn. I'm gonna have to start saving unedited versions of my writing now.

And hello and congratulations, Mitch!

I updated the post with some more details about what we *can* offer you. Ryan, per Jason's post, it's unpaid, sorry...but I just added what we can offer.

Sounds like a wonderful

opportunity. Here's hoping my work holds up!

Also, must get in touch with Lance and ask for pictures...

Congrats Mitch. I wish I could get a job at Bitmob, I just don't have the confidence in my grammar/punctuation yet to pursue anything serious. Not that I write like a 6 year old or anything. I just need to study more on the art of journalism.

Congratulations, Mr. Dyer!  A job well-done under pressure.  Better men have folded under such public scrutiny. Keep it up.

I do have one question @Jason concerning the submissions.  Do they all need to be game-related?  Or can one be off-topic, but representative of your writing and approach, etc.?

Jason_wilson
August 02, 2010

@Jon Game-related submissions would help! We're not Cat Fancy! (I would do 2 game-related, 1 non-game related if you feel that strong about something).

Shit. I have this really strong piece about feline nutrition that i wanted to use, but it appears Jason has a vendetta against cat-related write-ups.

@Jason: Gotcha.  Thanks so much.

@Nick:  Let's start our own site about cats.  We could call it Itty-Bitty Kitties.  The ad revenue will pay for all the cat-nip we want!  Forget these guys and their prejudices...

Congrats to Mitch. I glanced at some of his work, and I liked what I saw.

I've been looking for sites to branch out my work on, so I'm glad I noticed this - didn't do a single thing after I saw this until I had submitted an application.

Congrats, Mitch!! I look forward to reading more of your stuff!

Yikes, dig up earlier drafts of published work? I have my articles in mind, I just hope I can find some drafts/word docs that are similar enough to the build I initally posted on Bitmob. :) But, hey, it'll be nice to send in an application that doesn't need a full-blown cover letter and resume.

Good luck, everyone!

Congrats, Mitch! I've read a few of your articles since hearing that you're now a staffer, and I have to say you're a great writer.

Its great to see the site expanding its staff-base, and maybe someday, since I certainly haven't written enough yet, I might join the ranks. Yay for pipe-dreams! Congrats again Mitch!
