Randy Pitchford, CEO and President of Duke Nukem Forever developer Gearbox Software, believes that the console cycle we are all used to will have transformed into something completely different four years from now. I just can't wait to see all the wacky attempts to define "next gen" between now and then.
News Blips:
Battlefield 3 is coming to PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 this fall. Looks like it is going to be another shooter-heavy autumn. Battlefield 3 will be joining Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Gears of War 3, and likely a few others before all is said and done. Not much has been revealed about the sequel from DICE, but I will state, without reservation, that it will feature online multiplayer. A Battlefield 3 beta was announced previously as a bonus for anyone who pre-ordered Medal of Honor, so expect that between now and this fall.
Gearbox's President and CEO, Randy Pitchford, thinks that a "new cycle" is coming to video-game consoles. The latest entry of the interview series Irrational Interviews, conducted by Ken Levine, Creative Director at Irrational Games, is up on the developer's website. "I would expect that within four years from now, we will be in a new cycle of some kind," Pitchford said, "and there [will be] more certainty than there was two or three years ago about what that next cycle should look like." Currently, the fate of consoles as we known them is filled with many unknowns: When will the next gen start? What will be the distribution model for software? How will the systems fundamentally work? Pitchford didn't give specifics, but he thinks those questions will be behind us pretty soon. [Irrational Games]
Fallout: New Vegas DLC Dead Money finally arriving on PS3 and PC on February 22 -- all future DLC will hit simultaneously on all platforms. Fallout: New Vegas has had its issues, but there is good news for anyone who has stuck around. Not only is Dead Money finally making its way to PS3 and PC, but three more add-on packs are scheduled for the coming months. Those add-ons will be unleashed upon PC and PS3 at the same time as the 360. I haven't played New Vegas, so I don't know if this is in the main quest, but I'm betting one of the expansions involves a brothel.
Dungeon Siege 3 dropping on May 31 with pre-order bonuses available at your favorite retailers. Obsidian Entertainment must be busy. Not only are they still working on DLC for New Vegas, but they are also finishing up work on Dungeon Siege 3 -- an action-RPG for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. I'm gonna spend the time between now and the game's release attempting to decide which pre-order incentive I want. Best Buy, Amazon, and GameStop pre-orders all come with special in-game items. Walmart will be including a mini-comic and mini-strategy guide. Steam is gifting Dungeon Siege and Dungeon Siege 2 to players who pre-order the third title. Now, here's to this sequel creating renewed interest in the Uwe Boll In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale movies.
