PS32K: What Is Going On?!

Last night I assumed my Internet was up to something.

I power cycled the router, rebooted the modem, and waited it out for a couple hours. For some reason my PS3 refused to let me sign on and enjoy a rousing game of MAG! I eventually did a connection test.

IP Address: Found

Internet Connection: Found

PSN Network: Sorry mate!

Oh! That's not so bad. I just assumed that the PSN network was down. A little bit of unscheduled repair  never hurt anyone, right? Instead I sat down with my girl and watched a few episodes of The Office: Season 5. After that was wrapped up I gave it another go...

"An error has occurred. You have been logged out of the Playstation Network. (RANDOM NUMBERS)"

Shit! This is taking an awfully long time. Maybe it IS just me.

So I trotted over to the PC and checked out a few forum posts and it turns out a lot of people are having the issue. Suddenly a post went up on Kotaku (I was getting desperate for information, all right?!) that showed my situation was not just a network problem, it was a worldwide pandemic! Every PS3 is not only unable to log on to the PSN, they can't play certain games because of some trophy conflict. All the system calendars have been set back to a time before the system was even created! It's absolute chaos, the online community is in shambles. The only people enjoying their PS3's are the ones who had bought the slims.

I had scoffed, I had laughed at the idea of Y2K; especially ten years after the year 2000. Suddenly it had hit me in a time and place I had not suspected -- the focal point of my entertainment! Sure, it can still play Playstation one and two games okay, but many of my PS3 games have been compromised; as well as all the downloaded PSN games. I can't play Wipeout HD!

Is my PS3 done for? Should I give it a Viking burial and walk down to the store to purchase a Slim? No! There is hope. There is another Skywalker! The humans have been kicked off Pandora!  Dorothy was only dreaming! I checked out the network update feature, and it searched...

"You already have the latest update"

That means that the PS3's can still update. They can still distribute a firmware update despite the large majority of consoles being unable to log on. They can fix this. We just have to wait.

So we wait.

I guess I could finally go into my Xbox 360 backlog. I still haven't even played Perfect Dark Zero...

Do you see how desperate I am?!

Consider the comments section of this post your own personal support group. Let's hope they fix this before Yakuza 3 comes out, right?

We might very well be experiencing the single worst @#$%-up of this hardware cycle. Just when Sony was finally picking up steam, too......

Pretty crazy, huh?  I was playing MGS4 last night (I've recently borrowed my roommate's fat PS3), and when the date on my savee file was 12/31/1999....I was perplexed.  Thankfully I wasn't playing anything PSN related so as far as I know I can continue to play MGS4 unrestricted, besides having a nonsensical time-stamp on my save log.

Still...weeiirrrd bug.  Sucks for the majority of PS3 owners who aren't playing a game from 2 years ago.  :P

It's not a great situation, but at least it is unlikely to be a permanent problem. I am sure it will be fixed very soon, but until then I have decided to make an attempt to beat Persona 4 and Yakuza 2.

NEW DEVELOPMENT: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/latest-info-on-playstation-network-status/

Looks like we should not be using our PS3's for a whole DAY.

I don't know, I am hoping the only data that may be lost is trophy information, because I have already been using my PS3 all day. I don't care about trophies, so losing some will not bother me in the least. Let's hope I wake up tomorrow and haven't lost anything as important as save data, or something.

It's not the biggest screwup of this hardware cycle. Microsoft puts out a machine that dies -- sometimes repeatedly. Unless this renders all PS3s nonoperational, this issue palls in comparison to the Red Ring of Death.

Gee, I sure hope this isn't affecting the PS3 supercomputer cluster that the Air Force put together...

IF YOU ARE READING THIS YOU ARE THE RESISTANCE.

I've read unsubstantiated accounts that this is due to a hardware component with an internal clock bug. Microsoft's Zune apparently used the same chip, which caused the same exact problem back in 2008. Newer PS3 models use an updated chip which doesn't contain the error.

Basically, the PS3 thinks it's 2/29/2010 -- a date which doesn't exist, so an error is returned. Once GMT switches over to 3/12010, everything should work as normal. I just hope that Sony releases a firmware update soon so that this error doesn't pop up again.

The crisis is over, we can finally go back inside!

Hold your babies close and just be thankful that everything fixed itself. At least no yellow lights were involved!

This bug is the weirdest thing I have seen in awhile.  It amazes me every time I see a ridiculously persistent bug such as this one slip through the cracks.  I can think of a few others (i'm lookin' at you RROD).

Somewhere, at some point in time, there was a guy who said "Nah, it'll be fiiiiiiiiiiiine, let's let it go... don't worry about it!"

Also, I say "guy" intentionally, because -- with my wife as Exhibit A -- I say no woman would shrug off a potentially catastrophic detail such as this.

It should be fixed now.
