Retro Ads: Gear Up! With Game Gear

A few weeks ago, I welcomed a well-loved Game Gear into my collection. This officially completes my set of the main Sega consoles, but the quest for games has only just begun. The only problem is that not much of the system's library really holds up in 2010.

Like this curious selection here [via The Retroist]:

Hmm, no.... These titles don't fill me with confidence. I'm really only after the Shining Force game, but tracking that down is even more difficult than finding a Game Gear with a working speaker -- which I wasn't able to do....

For some reason I feel like snapping into a SlimJim.

Man, I would be all over these games if it was 1992 all over again. And how I longed for the TV Tuner, still today I wonder what the heck I saw in that thing. Now, just noticing the 'Flying Edge' logo makes me cringe, that was one awful software house.

Funny you should post this. I just played my Game Gear over the weekend and brought it to work on Monday. I can't recall the last time I had played it before that. Surprisingly, I was able to charge the battery pack and it still held the charge. Are broken speakers common? Mine still works but at the highest volume it still sounded too quiet. My game library for the Game Gear isn't great, I've only got around 10 games. I probably spent the most time playing Lemmings. Fortunately I have a Master System adapter and own around 40 Master System games. They don't all do well on the small screen though.

I only ever had two games for my Game Gear, and one of them came packaged with it (Sonic 2). I tested mine about a month ago when I bought some new games for it, and the speakers still work fine on it...and I've seen TV tuners for sale on eBay.

Oh, how I miss the 1990s...
