Retro Ads: Star Wars The Arcade Game

This Star Wars: The Arcade Game ad stealthily reveals game screens through a little compositional trickery. See those blue lines on his sunglasses? They're actually screenshots from the Commodore 64 version.

This kind of advertising was all the rage in the early '80s. The intent was to reveal just enough without actively misleading the consumer. Many ads would include microscopic screenshots rather than melding them so tastefully into the design.

I've included the TV spot that accompanied this ad after the jump.

Now THAT's playing with power. He's more enthusiastic than Will Farrell.

Maybe they could have done a little re-touching on the nostril region so we couldn't clearly map out about 90% of his sinus cavity.
