Style Guide Sunday: Write your headlines just like this

One of the most requested tips from our post last week, where we asked what writing tips you wanted, was an explanation of our new headline format. In December, community members may have noticed that we were using less capitalization.

First off, how do you format your title? It’s easy: Just write it like you would an ordinary sentence. Capitalize the first letter, the first letter in any proper nouns, and the first letter after the colon.

Hit the jump for some examples.

A few examples to get you started:
  1. Chasing the dream of a video-game "everyman"
  2. Sticking to your guns: Choice in the Mass Effect universe
  3. News Blips: Stellar Kinect sales, Sony's 3D headset display, eye doctors disagree with Nintendo, and more
In example #1, you will notice only one word capitalized. In the second, you will see the first letter of the title and the first letter following the colon. In the third example, you will see the same. However you will see capitalization on both words in “News Blips.” In this case, News Blips is a regular series here at Bitmob and thus becomes a proper noun.

Now that you know, start using it right away! Properly formated articles catch our eye, after all.

I had started to figure it out, but the aesthetic sense of titles drilled into me throughout high school and college just took over in some places and I would go on capitalization sprees. At any rate, now that I've seen an official post I'll make more of an effort to format correctly. Thank you for writing this!

And I was wondering if I might be able to make another request for writing tips? It seemed that every time I wanted to comment on the other article I was on my phone at work or getting 404 errors. But I think it might be really helpful, in addition to writing tips, to have Bitmob staff members tell the story of how they got their position here, or any industry experience or advice they might have that would be useful to aspiring game journalists.

Matthew: We could definitely do something like that in the future, but here's the easy answer: Most of us started as community members on Bitmob!
