The Greatest Game Box: Lunar Eternal Blue Complete

My Greatest Game Box is Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete.

When I paid $60 for Lunar: Eternal Blue Complete at K-Mart, the clerk thought I was crazy. No one in their right mind would have bothered with such a rare, expensive item.

He didn't realize that this package contained more extras than any other limited edition box in history.

The only reason I bought it was because I wanted to see the nude anime cutscene in the game. I had seen an Electronic Gaming Monthly preview of Lunar: Eternal Blue Complete. That article showed some enticing pictures of a beautiful naked girl, Lucia, in a bathhouse. The images of that cutscene were very small, but I fell in love with her right away.

I must be weird. I selfishly paid $60 because I wanted to see a nude scene in an RPG. I ended up receiving far more than I bargained for.

The thick game box contained a magnificent amount of extra books and trinkets. I still own everything in that complete collection: the map, the thick instruction booklet, Lucia's pendant and a CD with the game's soundtrack. Oh yeah, there's also a Making of Lunar CD inside the clear plastic game case.

Lunar: Eternal Blue Complete is easily one of the best games in my collection. The silly dialogue throughout the game kept cracking me up. The sheer amount of unlockable features is also astonishing. By the end of the 80-hour epic, I owned a massive collection of playable cutscenes and bromides--still shots of my favorite characters.

I always wanted to try the previous Lunar game, Silver Star Complete, but these packages were incredibly rare. I had a hard enough time trying to find Eternal Blue Complete. I literally had to scrounge through every game store until I found the only available box in a glass display in a K-Mart store.

For a long time, I'd given up on ever playing the game in its updated form. Then one day, I somehow caught Lunar: Silver Star Harmony in a GameStop store.

I thought this was a joke. This surely seemed like a low-quality version, in the same fashion as the Game Boy Advance version. However, this miniature PSP game contained all of the features of the complete Playstation 1 edition. The graphics were revamped with higher resolution backgrounds, larger sprites and vibrant character animation.

Although I had to raise a hefty amount of money to buy a PSP, this purchase felt like one of the best decisions in my entire life. The Lunar series has a strange, wonderful magic that no other RPG could ever match. The script is somewhat campy, but the cinematic style of the story is more captivating than any other role-playing adventure.

In spite of this great package, I'm still a bit disappointed. Silver Star Harmony is missing all the ridiculous extra stuff. I understand that I bought the standard edition, but even the limited edition is unsatisfactory. Where is the hardbound 60-page instruction manual? Where is the cloth map? Where is the Making of Lunar CD?

Lunar 2 Complete could literally devour my Silver Star Harmony box.

Okay, I'm more than a little spoiled. The Lunar series has that effect on all of its fans, though. Each Playstation 1 game box used to pack in an overwhelming amount of additional artwork and collectible items. It was one of the few games that gave me everything I ever wanted for my $60.

Heck, even the limited edition items in Catherine couldn't match the goodies packed in that giant Eternal Blue Complete box. These game companies deserve to give me more for my money. Sure, I'm selfish. Long ago, I used to get everything that I bargained for.

I call that a bargain--the best I ever had.

I love all those gigantic old Working Design boxes -- have Silver Star Story Complete, Eternal Blue, and Arc the Lad Collection sitting on the shelf as we speak. Those collector's editions were so much cooler than what passes for a limited edition these days.

The collections packed in much more interesting items back in the day. They didn't just have soundtrack CDs--they had hardbound manuals with beautiful pictures. I almost forgot that my character stand-ups were still there. I was afraid I would lose them if I used them too often.

Catherine's limited edition was a step in the right direction. It has a soundtrack CD and an entire book on the concept art and the music. Atlus probably could have added more, but the ESRB might have had a field day with some possibly obscene collectors items.

Yeah, the Catherine set was a step in the right direction for sure.

I'm such a Working Designs dork that I have the hardcover strat guides for a bunch of their games. Those are pretty spiffy too.

I actually had to peek in the guide at the bookstore, just so I could beat some of those bosses at the end of the game. Man, if I find one at my used bookstore, I'll be sure to buy it.

Yeah, they're really cool. I have four as I recall, Lunar, Lunar 2, Arc the Lad, and Vanguard Bandits. Lunar SSS might be paperback, though -- can't remember and it's in a box.

One thing I loved about Working Designs games is how, in the manual, they'd have a sort of "behind the scenes" piece on localizing the game, any changes made to the gameplay/mechanics/etc. Very insightful.

I appreciated watching the process behind the voice dubs. People take for granted how much work they put into some of those lines. I almost wish that XSeed did the same "Making of" video for their Lunar iteration on the PSP, because the difficulty was toned down dramatically.

I like hard games. I guess XSeed wanted a more cosmetic upgrade, with brighter colors and higher resolution character models.

How was the nude scene?

Oh, the nude scene is always great. Lucia literally walks in and asks if she can bathe with Hiro. Of course, most of the private parts are conveniently covered up, but I always enjoy how Lucia remains clueless about sexuality.

There's another nude scene that takes place later on, where Lucia actually freaks out and hides herself. I always like how Lucia's reaction changed in the second one. The Sega CD version was even funnier. Lucia gets scared, but she politely tells Hiro to wait outside. She's far too kind. Lol.

As far as i know, Catherine and Xenogears were the only other games where nudity actually played a significant part in showing character development. I wish games like Mass Effect would try to develop more meaningful romantic relationships. I literally have to scrounge around JRPGs and visual novels just to find what I'm looking for.

Hi there ! I'm french, but i'll try to write in english as well as i can. This was posted few months ago, but i just felt like i had to answer.

I do have to agree with you, collector's back then were way better than what we're actually getting today, except for both Catherine's LE (EU & US) which were both great and like you both said, Atlus was definetly going into the right direction.

As for the game itself, i have to say that i don't quite remember the game (geez, i have to play it again ^^), but even in terms of RPG's, we were getting better games years ago now (just like Xenogears, Chrono Cross & so on). I'm lucky enough to own the Silver Star Story Box (US), but i'm having a difficult time to find your box (or it's just supra expensive, even on ebay) since the price can reach a good 100-120$ at times (or i'm just unlucky, i don't know).

I've registered to this website just to post this, but i'll probably come back from time to time. Thanks for sharing your opinion with us, it was something warm to read !

David.

Hi David! The Lunar Eternal Blue Complete box was an extremely rare oddity. Back in 2000, I was only able to find it at a Target store, tucked away in a hard-to-reach spot in a glass display case. Even then, it cost a heaping $60.

That's great if you found tthe Silver Star Story box. And you're absolutely right about the quality of RPGs at the time. I still hold a special place in my heart for Lunar, though. The quality of the videos and the amount of bonus features was really unique. The intro with Hiro talking to his dragon, Ruby, was especially ahead of its time. The Sega CD version even included the unique combination of gameplay with long voice clips.

I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I think many people forget about the significance of Lunar: Eternal Blue. Without it, games wouldn't have ever achieved the cinematic standards it reached today.

I couldn't agree more with you on this one. I'm not sure if i'll ever be able to play the Sega CD version in the futur, but i'll try my best to get a copy of it.

I'm also working on buying a copy of Eternal Blue Complete Box for many reasons :

1 - For its rarity and quality
2 - Because i want to play it again
3 - Yeah i have to admit, your article just got me into it again ;D

If i get my hands on it, i'll post back with some pictures, i promise !
