The Secret Best Game Developer

When I think back to some of the games I’ve played this year, it’s an impressive list: God of War 3. Red Dead Redemption. Super Mario Galaxy 2.

The quality of these games is staggering (minus the occasional donkey woman, which, I would argue, adds character), and perhaps rightfully so. They all come from big-ticket developers who, at least from our vantage point, seem to have the necessary time and resources to fully realize their vision.

As such, we have developers we expect great things from. If someone ever has an argument about the best developer out there, it would be easy to make a case for, say, Nintendo. Fans of Infinity Ward. Rockstar San Diego, Blizzard, and Sony Santa Monica likely wouldn't break a sweat either.

But more recently a few less hyped, yet tons-o'-fun games have occupied my time, and that got me thinking (with apologies to old friend Shane Bettenhausen): What is the secret best developer going right now? Which developer could you throw into the above argument and make a legitimate case for that isn't already a household name?

Last generation, I’d argue the title would have gone to either Criterion (Burnout series, Black) or Pandemic (Mercenaries, Star Wars: Battlefront, Destroy All Humans!).

This generation? Well, let’s look at some contenders.

Initially, Realtime Worlds seemed like a surefire hit after their splash with Crackdown. But given what’s happened since (not developing Crackdown 2, releasing the poorly received APB), I’d dismiss them. A company like DICE is on the brink. Everyone know the developer of Mirror’s Edge and the Battlefield games, yes?

How about Bizarre Creations? This developer’s highlights include Blur, The Club, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2, and the Project Gotham Racing games. I haven’t played PGR4 or The Club, but by most accounts, they are well loved (although more divided on The Club). And the time I’ve put into Blur -- one of my current games -- has impressed me.

My vote, however, would go to Volition. These guys have given us Red Faction: Guerrilla, Saints Row, and Saints Row 2. Having just now crossed Guerrilla off my pile of shame, I’ve collectively put plenty of hours into this trio of games. I’d also argue that the open-world genre has defined this generation. That in mind, Volition has given us games in which messing around in the world itself is as satisfying as the game proper. Guerrilla’s sledgehammer, for one, is a joy to play with. And those who knock the Saints Row games as mere GTA clones are missing a world that rewards players for getting off track -- which some argue is when GTA is at its finest.

I feel this is just the beginning of the list, though -- Monolith, Sucker Punch, and plenty more not-quite-mainstream developers come to mind, each with legitimate beefs. We all have companies and games we admire, plus, who doesn’t like being able to say they were steering the ship before everyone else jumped onboard? It’s like being the first one to tell his friends that The Wire is great (which I was not), or that they absolutely need to watch Mad Men (which I did).

As we all know, secrets are meant to be shared. So now it's your turn. What are your choices for secret best developer?

I don't even own a PS3, but I think the Pixeljunk guys are a perfect contender for this honor. Every game they've made (except for maybe Racers from what I hear,) has been great. And with downloadable titles on the rise, they're a great sign of how the industry has evolved.

In that same vein, Gaijin Games should also be considered. Maybe even ngmoco.

Does Platinum Games count? I havent played their DS game, but I enjoyed MadWorld and frakking loved Bayonetta. My fingers remain tightly crossed for Vanquish.

Volition also did Descent: Freespace. And also Descent 1-2 if you want to count when they were part of Parallax. I think I have to go with PopCap, though.

I know they've only made one game, but Media Molecule (LittleBigPlanet) seems like they're on the right track.

Also, Bethesda Softworks has done a great job with Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Obsidian hurts me so, but I love them anyways. I'm waiting for them to figure out how to develop good games. One day... one day.

Russian developer Katauri makes a great series for PC: King's Bounty, a turn-based strategy-RPG. This is one of the best examples of the genre in recent memory. It's fun and addicting, and it's not as linear as it first appears, like other games of its genre (if that's an issue for you). I wish more people knew about this gem and give it a go.

@Adam Obsidian does make good games! Play Neverwinter Nights 2 and its expansions? Sure, you've got to wait for patches, but once issues are fixed, their games can be quite enjoyable. NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer is one of the best RPGs in ages.

I don't know if I'm mentioning these just because you did, Greg...but I like Volition and Sucker Punch as well. I dig Criterion, too.

From Software. Demon's Souls was such a pleasant surprise, and I'm looking forward to Armored Core 5 later this year. These guys just know how to make games with well-designed, highly interconnected systems and with an emphasis on solid controls, which make all the difference.

Although I'm a little hesitant to list this next one, I'm really curious as to what Runic Games will do after Torchlight. I think they could be a developer to keep an eye on.

I'm gonna have to go with TOSE on this, guys. Who knows what classics they've had a hand in?

My vote goes to Amanita Design. They just recently released the superb Machinarium, which I think is one of my favourite games. Great article by the way.

Friends who know me well know that I love the import-only Touhou games. Their one-man developer Team Shanghai Alice a.k.a. ZUN has made an abnormally huge cult following.

Why would such a series have as much fame as mainstream games? They have ugly-looking art and graphics, sometimes questionably-arranged synth music, and they're too short. The counter-points start here:

-The character designs. The Touhou games feature one of the most colorful casts in video games. You've got a tomboyish, book-stealing, beam-spamming blonde witch; a maid who can stop time and throw knives a'la Dio Brando; a crazy little vampire girl who's so dangerous her older sister has her locked in her room; Those are only a few of the over 50-some characters(just an estimate.). What the games' creator lacks in drawing capabilities, the community makes up for in their fan art.

-The music COMPOSITION. It doesn't matter how well music is arranged or sung, if it's not composed well enough, then to me it's utter dirt. Thankfully, Touhou's music compositions are good enough to make up for the cheesy synth it's accompanied with. Don't believe me? Ask independent(doujin circles) music groups such as IOSYS and COOL&CREATE who (legally)sell albums that contain remixes of Touhou's music.

-All this, and more...

I'm loving all the suggestions! PixelJunk is amazing. @John: Hell yeah Platinum counts (I haven't played MadWorld, but I enjoyed Bayonetta).

With my suggestions, I was just looking at games released this generation, but of course this topic spans any console cycle. Keep them coming!

Grasshopper Manufacture may not make the greatest games ever made, but I they've had a consistent track record with me. They make some of the most truly bizarre games out there. I've never walked away from one of their games feeling like it was a waste of my time.

Semi Secret the makers of Canabalt is my secret best game developer. They are a four person studio making great Flash, and mobile games. Still play Canabalt a few times a week. http://semisecretsoftware.com

I liked Arkham Asylum so much I'd have to say Rocksteady. However, that's their only hit and also only their second game. I never played Urban Chaos.

I'm gonna put a vote out there for WayForward. They do have a lot of licensed properties that are probably less than stellar, but if it helps them fund stuff like Contra 4, Boy and his Blob, Mighty Flip Champs, and the upcomming Shantae, keep it going!

I'm in the PixelJunk camp, too. And Twisted Pixel on the XBLA side of things.

I'll throw in The Bememoth (two awesome games under their belt and another one coming). I'll also side with Greg on Bizarre Creations, they seem to be quite versatile. Racing games, arena shooters, third person shooters, they do it all!

I'm going to go really far out there and say GSC Game World.  I really love the Stalker games.

@Roberto The Behemoth is great! Even if their games are hard as hell...

@Chris Never played the Stalker games, but people who do seem to love them to no end.

@David Yeah, WayForward has been on a good run as of late. I hope they keep bringing back beloved franchises and doing right by them.

@Johathan Rocksteady is legit now, but from what I remember of the EGM review, Urban Chaos wasn't too hot.

@Suriel A bizarre game can still resonate with you. I think Grasshopper is a great suggestion.

Keep an eye out for Relic, they may be a huge hit if they keep it up.

I've got one.....That Game Company

Even though their games really aren't FULL titles (being defined as a product lasting more than 5 total hours of game play from beginning to end), they were very different ideas that were very enjoyable.  flOw and Flower are good games, and with their level of creativity, I'd say TGC should at least be considered.

I'd say Remedy deserves to be up there. Sure they haven't put out much product, but Alan Wake is a great game with tight controls and astounding atmosphere. Other than that I really love Volition's Saints Row games ( much more so than GTA) as well as Rocksteady.
