This week in video-game history is fairly slow like most things are in the gaming world just before the holiday rush sets in. September will likely be bursting with all sorts of retro trivia.
August 22
1998: PC Gauntlet-clone Get Medieval goes on sale in North America. The game is noted for having a mode called Dragon Quest.
August 23
1996: GoldenEye 007, the most misremembered Nintendo 64 multiplayer games in the world, goes on sale in Japan. Two days later it hits the Western markets.
2001: It's hard to believe that Devil May Cry is nearly 10 years old, but on this date in 2001 it went on sale in the Japanese market.
August 24
1996: The original Team Fortress game goes on sale. Fourteen years later, the game is still going strong alongside its equally successful sequel.
2004: Penny Arcade holds their first expo in Seattle.
August 25
1967: Voice actor Hiyami Nobuyuki is born. He is the voice behind Soul Calibur's Nightmare and the source of Link's limited voice work in a few Legend of Zelda games.
August 27
1992: Super Mario Kart revs up its engine in Japan. I think the Super Nintendo Mario Kart is still the best one in the series. You can keep your Double Dash and what have you. All I need is that feather....
1994: Mother 2 goes on sale in Japan. This is the only Mother game to make it to Western markets with an official localization. We call it Earthbound.
2003: SOCOM kicks off Sony's dabbling into online console gaming. People were still playing PS2 SOCOM games online well into the PlayStation 3's lifespan.
August 28
1965: Satoshi Tajiri is born. His profound love of insects eventually turned into one of the most successful franchises in history: Pokémon.
