The tradition of journalistic coverage on gaming has now become a sort of joke told with Doritos in one hand and a cup of Mountain Dew in the other.

AC3 can occasionally glide through the trees like an Assassin. I only wish it didn't have as much trouble on the landings.

With Chris Roberts seemingly back to his old haunts, I thought it might be neat to turn the spotlight on another project that he had (or still has) in the works before he left Origin and founded Digital Anvil - Silverheart.

"I was a little leery on Yakuza jumping on the whole "zombie bandwagon" routine, but I thought I'd give it a try anyway. The demo didn't seem that bad...and I was so wrong. I also felt the same pain you did, Jay.

I love the Yakuza series and it kills me to see this. I was bored a few hours in from shooting zombies, zombies, and even more zombies ad nauseum. At least Dead Rising tried to keep things interesting with do-it-yourself weapons, leading survivors back to safety, psychopaths, and the general goofiness of using anything as a weapon.

The controls didn't bother as me as much, but even as a third person shooter, I just couldn't get into it.

What is more depressing is that we get this instead of a port for Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan!. That needs to get over here for everyone to enjoy its awesomeness.

"I completely agree. I was satisfied with the sacrifice my Shepard had given the galaxy after asking so many others to do the same thing during the course of his career. I saw it using the same lens that I saw Tom Hanks' character in Saving Private Ryan - sure, I would have wanted him to live to become a school teacher again and be with this wife, but he did what was asked of him in the line of duty. That's what I took away from that one moment.

The rest of the ending around it, yeah, I wasn't too happy with certain elements, but even then, that was BioWare's decision to do what they did for the ultimate story they wanted things to end with. That's their burden to bear and if they screwed up over it, that's also on their shoulders and will always be.

They might even do something in the same vein that Bethesda did with Broken Steel for Fallout 3 which basically added more ending to the game if you opted to do it. But I'm okay with ending Shepard's story without having to go to DLC in much the same way some have suggested I stick with Ender's Game and safely ignoring everything else afterwards.

After being upset with Roger Ebert over the argument whether games are art, seeing the counter arguments, and so on, I'm also surprised to see the same level of furor is being used to push BioWare into rethinking what ended Shepard's story. At the same time, BioWare isn't completely without blame, either, for the statements made to foster those expectations over the years. But that's a whole other topic."

"For me, it depends. I'm a sucker for art books and free DLC, especially if it's for a property that I support. But some can get pretty ambitious. I still see a few of the PC versions of Bioshock 2 on shelves, the one with the vinyl record and posters, lying around.

I've seen stacks of Killzone 3 CEs...the ones with the Helghan cat helmet...piled on the floor months later and marked way down. The new Lord of the Rings game, War in the North, comes with a faux quiver. I still see a few of those on shelves. Not sure what I'd do with a fake quiver. Maybe I'll use it to fight fake ogres."

"Here's a link on Mobygames for Floor 13 which does a pretty good job summarizing what it's about and has screenies:

http://www.mobygames.com/game/floor-13

It's also under the very ambiguous heading of "abandonware" and, in the end, it wasn't that great a game but notable for the gruesome stuff it "allowed" the player to get away with.

Another notable PC game is Hell: A Cyberpunk Adventure. It's a peculiar adventure game, but it featured quite a bit of mature content especially when the two protagonists work for a repressive theocracy controlling the US in 2095. Anyone caught with anything offensive...like porn...are often punished by being sent to "Hell". Also starred Grace Jones (as the androgynous Imperator, Solene Solux) and Dennis Hopper (as the demon, Mr. Beautiful). It was out on PCs first, but came out for the 3DO later.

And how could I forget Samurai Shodown and its anime-styled geysers of victory blood!? So much fun with that game in the arcades."

"Time Killers is incredibly over-the-top violent. Heads, limbs, you name it. Losing an arm didn't mean the fight was over. It just meant that the character might have been related to the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. NARC is another arcade favorite. Hitting a mob of drug dealers with a rocket sent flying bits flying everywhere. You could arrest the bad guys, but it was often easier to play a NARC Terminator.

Smash TV was another one that threw bodies into the meat grinder. The follow up, Total Carnage, had gone so far as to parody the Middle East with General Akhboob who turned out to be a giant Hitler head at the end (I'm starting to suspect a theme here). Much blood and chaos ensued with both.

For something more mental, there's a little known game, Floor 13 in '92. You ran a secret government office charged with keeping the status quo, though at any cost including kidnapping and torture. And the game didn't shirk from presenting torture reports to you and then asking what to do next to break someone.

Also loved the Immortal! In addition to the kill scenes, the death scenes for the wizard were about as fun (and painful!) to watch."

"I've always wondered about why I needed to beat down a stranger's car in Street Fighter. Part of me wondered if the the owner would bust out from side of the screen and start fighting me over trashing their ride.

But so many mysteries! Like how the military could summon tsunamis in Capcom's 1943 using a P-38 (maybe Spanky was moonlighting time periods), or why the route for Paperboy includes a deadly obstacle course at the end with moving ramps. The answers must be out there."

"Nice writeup! I love this game, definitely one of my favorites regardless of platform. The soundtrack also deserves some mention for being amazing, alien, and unique all at the same time. Finding a copy of that for a decent price is about as hard as finding the game for the same reason, but definitely worth a listen.

The OST for Panzer Dragoon Orta, especially for Anu Orta Veniya that plays over the end credits, is also a good pick as well as being much easier to find."

"I've also seen several of these crop up on Ebay over the years and I'm not a fan of the comic/baseball card metric being shoehorned onto video games, especially because of the reasons that you've pointed out  most seem to purchase them for.

The good news is that time is almost always on your side when it comes to collecting if you're not in a rush. You can even piece together your own copy from bits an pieces with enough patience if you want to be a completionist about it. And there are always more than a few sellers out there willing to inject some sanity into their own auctions!

But while I think spending a grand on a hermetically sealed Earthbound makes little sense, I wouldn't think it too unusual for something like a sealed copy of NBA Elite 11 for the PS3."

"That picture of Jaws brought back some gruesome NES memories. I remember having to aim the boat to stab the shark which was one of the most bizarre boss battles I've been in. Fit the movie, though!"

Congrats on the great news! I'll admit, I'll miss the BitMob name (and quietly keep my fingers crossed that the new logo, if there is one, will be lovingly pixelized). At the same time, I'm certain that the spirit of what it brought together will still be here shaping what comes next with faces old and new. Can't wait to see what happens next!

"Whoa, didn't know they did that with the 'taker before! Also, thanks for the head's up on SF X Tekken - I didn't realize that they had added those features in. It certainly sounds a lot "friendlier", but I hope there will be an alternate setting of sorts to ease off of the changes like what BioWare is doing with ME3."
