It's amazing to hear that Extra Life pulled in almost a half a million dollars for children's hospitals all over the world. I have to give Team Bitmob kudos for giving so much of their time to such a worthy cause.
This past Saturday, thousands of gamers all over the world joined forces for Extra Life, an event in which people play video games for 24 hours to benefit their local Children's Miracle Network hospitals. As of this writing, the event has raised $443,999 for these hospitals, and that's not even the final total. To put this number into perspective, this was Extra Life's third year, and the combined donation total for the first two was $290,000. So when I say that this was the best Extra Life ever, I am not using hyperbole.
How did the Bitmob fundraising team do? Really well. With four members from two countries and a fundraising goal of $1,000, Mitch Dyer, Kenneth Wesley, Brian Taylor, and I managed to raise a combined total of $1,566 (as of October 20). To put that another way, if $1,000 was plain, old kicking ass, Team Bitmob kicked 156.6%'s worth of ass. We kicked so much ass that they had to bring in more ass in for us to kick, presumably from another room or a warehouse or something.
My girlfriend documented the day with her camera. For those curious, this is what Extra Life looks like:
It begins! With Wii, of all things.
Because of the sun and its tendency to shine at 8 in the morning, we
tried to make the apartment as dark as possible.
These in-game arcade cabinets made my day.
Whoops. You caught me Wii-ing.
King of the Hill...?
This is what I did while I waited for DLC to load -- by which I mean "get
a Philip Glass song stuck in my head for 4 hours."
My mom brought me soup. The soup sustained me.
"Oh, deer."
I started the day out right, with the juice. That didn't last long.
For several reasons, this is the funniest picture in this post.
My traditional Extra Life photo pose. At least I'm not sitting on a giant
bean bag this year.
As the day went on, casualties continued to pile up.
I guess I like Vault.
This is how I ended the day. Build enough horse armies, and you
don't need to be awake to destroy Shaka Zulu.
If you're curious about what Extra Life sounds like, I recorded a special episode of my podcast, with guest appearances from the rest of Team Bitmob. It's available for download here.
In short, it was another great year for Extra Life, and I'm already looking forward to the next one.
