Goozex or Goose Sex?

Editor's note: I'm unfamiliar with Goozex (and goose sex), but a quick scan of the company's support forum reveals that Tony isn't the only customer with problems. This doesn't mean that Goozex is bad, but it appears that are some kinks in the system that still need to be worked out. Are you a Goozex member? Share your experiences, both good and bad, in the comments. - Aaron

A few months ago, I engaged in a conversation that to the lone eavsdropper’s ear, would have sounded quite insane.

“Tony, have you tried goose sex yet?”

“What?!”

“Goose sex, have you tried it? I just got Burnout Paradise from goose sex.”

You can see where this is going. Anyway, what I heard as "goose sex" was actually being said as Goozex, a video gaming trading community. Members of the site can trade their games for points that translate into the site’s currency. They then use their points to get other games from other users. Members are charged $1 for each game they receive, and the previous owner pays for the shipping of the game.

After this brief conversation, I decided I would try Goozex for myself. Their concept offered me an alternative to my lonely used and completed games sitting under the television collecting dust. It was also a way to be a part of a community where fellow gamers had my back.

It all sounds so great on paper, doesn’t it?

And it is, if you are willing to part with your copy of Dead Space for the first Gears of War or an old Call of Duty game. Technically, that might not be true, but realistically, it is.

Let me explain.

If you’ve used Netflix -- and most of us have -- these two websites have one similarity: the waiting. And with Goozex, you'll be waiting for a long time if you request a popular title like World at War, for example. You see, when I listed my game, I didn’t fully understand that the waiting list for a newer title would put me to the back of the line behind anywhere from 150 to 200 people. And that’s not just on a couple of games, but most of the decent ones.

I listed Dead Space and immediately it was devoured by the site request list. Psyched, right? Sure, why wouldn’t I be? I had 1,000 Goozex points to shop with. I picked out a couple titles to mix it up. I chose a variety to see which one became available first, then waited with a smile. One day. One week. Two weeks. One month. Nothing happened. The most I had moved up on any game in the request list was six places -- from 185 to 179 -- on F.E.A.R. 2.

I decided to look a little further and try to be a bit less picky with my selections. I had to. Goozex already ate and shat out my game internally and left me with nothing but points. That was that. So I selected Far Cry 2 for 550 points and still had a few left over. I had played the game before, but I never finished it because someone left it on the roof of my car as I sped away from their house on a snowy day in December.

Presently, I have The Orange Box in my request list. Or should I say, "I've have had The Orange Box requested for the last two months." I started out at 200-something and now am down to about 190. If I calculate this correctly, I should have my copy by 2015.

In the end, I think I might have preferred the goose sex after all.

Sounds like a lousy experience. Not sure if it's worse than goose sex, but it's rapidly on its way. Hopefully your story will spare someone else the same fate. You took one for the team. Think of yourself as a hero - you'll feel better.

Maybe you should try switchgames.com which I think is better and my user name on there is ATC1982

It sounds like a good idea, but, damn, I'd rather sell my games for a fraction of their value at EB Games than wait forever for a game I could easily find elsewhere.

On paper I think this is a great idea, but they really need to get it together. The concept is top notch and that's what drew me in.

I don't advocate trading in games to Gamestop or EB, though. Your getting screwed and so are the developers.

I try to stick to a trading circle within my group of friends. That way, if you don't get your game back or something of equal value you're not just dealing with a website but someone who's address you already know.
Still, it'd be nice for a concept like this to work.

for someone who's trying to games on the semi-cheap...Goozex has done right by me [although i have no idea how to get PSN games]. I've never traded a game in...I've always bought games.

I lucked out back when the site was having a new user deal. Basically, you could pick out any game under X points (I think it was 100?) just for signing up with a new account. There were no tokens required, and S&H; was handled by the owner of the game I requested.

So, I took a shot and chose Viewtiful Joe. The game was sent over to me relatively promptly seeing as how the line for it was empty or very short (this was a while ago). All I was asked to do in return was provide a positive review of the sender to increase their reputation within the Goozex community.

Or experiences are obviously not equal since I had nothing to lose and everything to gain, but I thought I would throw it out there anyway.

The tokens aren't for shipping Alberto. They are for each trade. Goozex charges $1 a trade. I gues that's some of their profit and the sender pays for shipping.

I've been using Goozex for months now, with 113 games sent out and 92 games received. I've had a really positive experience with Goozex, because I know exactly what I want to get out of it. I don't ever expect to get new games any time soon after they're released, so I don't allow myself to get easily disappointed. The best application of Goozex is to get rid of a lot of those old games that really have no real value at a place like Gamestop and using the resulting points to get some solid games from a couple years back. I was able to get rid of a bulk of my Xbox collection and essentially trade up to my 360 collection in this way, and I really have no regrets.

I've been using Goozex for a while and my experience has been much better. While you can't get a brand new game right away but usually any games older than eight months or so will be readily available. Even really popular games, in some senses especially because tons of people bought it, tend to be done with it forever at around the same point, and all of a sudden tons of copies go up as people try to sell off when it's still at high value.

It's worth noting that where you are in the line isn't indicative of how many people will get a copy ahead of you. The line is everybody who put it on hold or has a current request going, but the VAST majority of those people either don't have enough points and/or credits to actually do it. In reference to the Orange Box (360 version) for example right now in "all" trading regions there are 12 active full package offers going right now, which means 12 people are ready to send the game and be matched immediately. Meanwhile out of the 268 people requesting a full package, 34 are "restricted" (users with an active request but not enough points or credits), 244 are "on hold" (users who are in line but don't want it at the moment), and 0 are ready to be matched. This means that if you have enough points+credits at this moment and have an active request, you'll get matched pretty much right away and skip all of those people...so I would expect a notification of an incoming copy pretty soon.

So you can't get brand new games, but you'll be able to get most marquee games in under a year or so. I got Dead Space and Prince of Persia about two months ago, which would put Dead Space at 10 months and PoP at 8.

PS Your problems might be karmic because the gaming gods are angry you didn't already have the Orange Box. Seriously I hope you get your copy soon because those are must-plays.

I hear you Leanard. I wrote this a few weeks ago and since have bought the Orange Box and restored my Karma hopefully :)

And I agree that certain titles are more readily available, but in my experience I guess I just didn't have the patience to wait weeks and in some cases months at a time, for one game. I found that after a few weeks of being on a list for one title, there was already another one I wanted instead.

I've done a few deals on goozex all of which were pretty timely, but of course I chose the games I did because of the low waiting time.

While it doesn't have a currency system like goozex, which could be a good thing, or possibly bad, I use www.gametz.com very frequently. The whole idea there is that if you want something that someone has available for trade you just have them check your "list" for things they're interested in.

Ideally, every user will go through their collection and add it to their list of available for trade games. There's also a wanted list where people add the games they'd like to receive. Combining the wanted and available lists, there's an automated process on the website that matches up people who have compatible wants and available-s.

Having done nearly 100 trades on the site now I can say it's pretty trustworthy, since I've never had any major issues at all. It's definitely worth a look if you're interested in getting rid of some old games.:D

I've been using Goozex since the spring and I'm pretty satisfied with my experience. I don't use it for new games, I only use it to find older games I never played. I've also used it for a few of the RebelFM Game Clubs. I only had one bad experience with a seller, but it was resolved quickly and I got my points back.
You could try buying new games, if time is an issue for you. They offer that now, although I haven't tried it yet. It's possible that it might be just as slow. But anyways, I like it. But I'm also not in a rush to receive my games because they're not new releases.

I was introduced to Goozex by my cousin a few months ago and its been nothing but great for me. Got rid of a lot of old games normal trading stores wouldn't even take! IN return I got the likes of Endwar, Fight Night 4, Grand Theft Auto 4 and Virtua Tennis 2009. In what world could you trade Colin Mcrae 2005 (PSP) Xtreme-G (gamecube) and Mario Kart Double Dash (Gamecube) and get Grand Theft Auto 4 in return?? In the Goozex world thank you very much. I love the site but I will have a look at others people have mentioned in their comments.

I absolutely love Goozex, but that's probably because I went into it with the right mindset. I currently just buy all the new games I want to play right now, and use Goozex for the stuff that I'm really interested in, but don't need to play immediately or necessarily want to pay full price to own. And in that respect, Goozex has served me really well.

Yeah I like Goozex. I got 11 DVDs in a span of 3 weeks and only one of them was scratched enough to where I had to return it. Most of all my transactions have been positive and I really appreciate the service Goozex offers.
