Bitmob contributor Jason Wilson and Matt Chandronait from Area 5 join Shoe and Demian this week to explain why they don't even bother to play certain genres of games. Once that's out of the way, they dream about a mystical world in which Apple makes a true gaming console. Maybe it's not such a far-fetched dream after all?

You think that's it? Oh, you are so wrong. The crew also schools developers on how to get their online games ready for online play, figure out if it's truly a bad thing to be "casual," and answer the Bitmob community question about how they'd make an adventure game with interesting controls.

Bitmob.com - Mobcast #15: On this week's Mobcast Dan Hsu, Demian Linn, Jason Wilson, and Matt Chandronait solicit the community for a podcast intro, discuss the genres they don't play, Apple's future in the console market, whether or not "casual" is a dirty word, how developers could better prepare for the launch of their online games, and ponder how they'd make an adventure game with interesting controls. E-mail the crew at letters@Bitmob.com.

A great show. Jason is awesome, and I hope he will be in more podcasts in the future. The Fat Princess problems have been somewhat fixed.... somewhat...

[games i don't play] sport games (ugh. i cant stand them). [apple's quest 2 take over games] i think they very well could (i heard that the iphone is more powerful then the wii?). [is casual a bad word] yesyesyesyesyes (casual game vampires bit nintendo, and now it sucks). [adventure game with interesting controls] make it on wii (:P).

I really love when Jason is on any show. He was great on RebelFM. But the past couple episodes the audio was fine. But for some reason this week it sounded odd.

I believe Infinity Ward is calling it the Prestige Edition after Prestige Mode from the 360 and PS3 versions of Modern Warfare 1 online multiplayer. Okay...back to listening to the rest of the podcast now! :)

Oh man, my friends and I were just talking about casually hardcore games a couple days ago! Casual vs. Hardcore does seem to be mostly used by marketers, but also by developers to describe the levels of difficulty in a game. To us, it doesn't matter what label is used or where, we see casual and hardcore in two main ways. One, as a way of stating how we are interacting with the game or how we believe the game is being interacted with by the general populous, as far as we can tell at least. Are we playing ridiculous amounts of hours a day? Are we spending hours finding strategies? Are we being extremely competitive? Are we making strategies for others to read about!?! etc... If yes to these or others, then we are playing it hardcore. The second way we see them, as with the developers, is to decide how much effort we want to put into the game by choosing a level of difficulty (casual, normal, hard, etc...).

Just started listening to the podcast right now. I gotta say, so far the editing is making me want to kill the podcast and just wait for next week for my the next Mobcast, which is a real shame. I mean, not to offend (much) but was Quentin Tarantino editing this week's podcast or what? I'm gonna try and push forward, hoping the editing gets lighter. Anyways, just some quick feedback. Editing bad, RAW good!

Thanks Michael. Hopefully I'll be on again soon. Stephano: Thanks for the feedback. I edited the show this week, and I'll be sure to go back and listen again to see if I perhaps went a little overboard with the edits.

Aaron: That's good to hear. Though, I will say that the editing did lighten up after the first 5 minutes or so, thanks to the more fluid conversations that followed all the "Hi, I'm..." stuff (which naturally brings along moments of silence and uh's)!

Can't you see this "hardcore vs Casual" war is tearing us apart!!!!;D

I feel the word casual should only apply to the player, not the game. If casual dictates that your able to pop into a game and play for 10 or 20 minuets then that could be any game. Sometimes I turn on Killzone 2 and only play for 10 minuets before quitting the game to do something else. This means that sometimes I play killzone 2 casually. Other times I'll play killzone 2 all night, and during that I'm playing much more hardcore. Similarly at times I play games like bust a move, peggle, or puzzle fighter for hours and hours. I could easily play these games casually, but instead I play them as a hardcore gamer.

I'm the guy that submitted the question, sorry if anyone listening to podcast was confused by my topic because of the awkward writing. http://www.destructoid.com/rev-rant-fun-isn-t-enough-142052.phtml

Sorry, I hit the wrong button, what I was trying to do was link to a couple of videos http://www.destructoid.com/rev-rant-fun-isn-t-enough-142052.phtml that had a a games journalist and a games developer talking about the same thing I was asking. Most of the games I can think of that have a story have a primary game mechanic that involves violence. The exception of these is adventure games. The problem, in my opinion, is that adventure games of the point and click variety do not have a experience of controlling the game that is engaging as something like Half-Life. In the podcast the guys listed several examples of games that had interesting stories but the primary actions in the game were to kill people. So how would you create a game of a different genre other than action that had a story, other than the style of point and click adventure games? In a response to the video above (which is linked to in the linked page) above David Jaffe says that no one knows how to make that game.
