Nintendo is releasing one of its biggest games for the original DS the same month that I'm predicting the 3DS will debut in our office pool. That's bad news for me: While the 3DS is backwards compatible, I find it hard to believe that Nintendo would release the 3DS and Pokémon Black and White simultaneously.
News Blips:
North American Pokémasters will be rounding up and imprisioning pocket monsters again on March 6, when Nintendo releases Pokémon Black and White for the DS. The popular and long-running series hasn't changed much from sequel to sequel, but Black and White promise to spruce up the more aged gameplay mechanics, via a more visually engaging battle system. Of course, there will be a new set of creatures to be caught and a new adventure that will unfold, but there will also be a more visually-engaging battle system and overworld. Expect these two games to sell boatloads, though I think I may wait for the mythical Black and White special version: Pokémon Purple with Black-and-White Polka Dots.
Team Meat admits defeat and cancels the Nintendo WiiWare version of Super Meat Boy. The mad scientists responsible for the difficult platformer told Joystiq that Nintendo would not budge from their 40MB limit for all WiiWare games, though not for a lack of Team Meat trying. "There is no way to avoid the fact that if we released a 40MB version of Super Meat Boy it would be a shit version of the game," said Edmund McMillen, the game's designer. McMillen admitted that they didn't take the limit seriously, assuming they could get around the rules when Nintendo saw the quality of their game. There is still a chance that the game could be released on Wii via retail, but that chance is remote at best. Thankfully, Meat Boy's adventures will always be available on Xbox Live Arcade and Steam -- where it is presently discounted to $7.49.
The second Humble Indie Bundle finishes with revenue exceeding $1.8 million. The bundle was a collection of indie games packaged together and sold through a pay-what-you-want model, with the proceeds split up among charity and the developers. The latest sale has now closed, with over 230,000 people purchasing the games at an average price of $7.83. On the collection's website, visitors can sign up for updates regarding a possible Humble Indie Bundle 3, which doesn't yet have a date or any games attached to it. I got in on this while the getting was good, but now I'm left wondering: Is this a tax write-off?
One man lovingly recreates the overworld from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past in Minecraft. The Minecraftification of the SNES classic took over 100 hours, and Roman DeNu, the man responsible, isn't finished yet. DeNu's future plans include the Dark World and all of game's dungeons. I don't ever remember having time like this for a video game. [Kotaku]
