The Internet is Freaking Out About: Heavy Rain Gameplay

This is the first new Heavy Rain footage since the Leipzig Games Convention 2008, and it's a full two-and-a-half minutes of gameplay, extra heavy on the quicktime events. Think it looks as good as last time?

Right now I would still talk about Trico over this game.

I liked Indigo Prophecy a LOT until it went completely batshit, but man that is some awful voice acting. Too bad because otherwise it looks interesting. Also I'm not sure about the QTEs. What they deem "natural" commands still might not be instinctual to the person playing. Why Triangle to dodge instead of X?

Yeah, I just watched some of this on GT and I have to say, I'm even more excited than I was before. IMO, this is the PS3s killer app, hands down. I recently played Indigo Prophecy on my Xbox360 and found few faults. The fist of two issues I had in Indigo Prophecy was with the on screen button prompts. I found them to be way too intrusive and distracting at times (using large colored buttons that seemed to cover the entire screen was a bad idea...). The new system appears to be much more elegant and subtle, almost invisible. And those shades are totally rad. The other issue had to do with story and i could go on but at this point I might as well start blogging. BTW, I really liked the story in Indigo.

You liked the part after the guy came back as a zombie and the game turned into some kind of Matrix crap? Seriously? I would like an explanation, I'm really curious about what was good about it.

I'm very much looking forward to Heavy Rain based on how much I enjoyed Omikron and Indigo Prophecy. That said, while I'm not sure what stage of development this footage is from, I'm disappointed in the low fidelity of the character models and environments, as well as the campy voice acting. If David Cage hadn't been spending the last two years hyping the hell out of the ground breaking emotional experience and only-possible-on-PS3 technology his team was developing, I would probably come away with a much more positive first impression. Again, I'm still stoked for Heavy Rain, but this game's visual fidelity does not at all match the picture I had painted in my head based on the previous character models, screens, and concept art I had seen, nor the big talk coming from the studio and press. Please, someone in the know tell me this isn't representative of everything they've seen of the game.

I agree about the button prompts: very subtle and non-intrusive, yet obvious enough for gameplay. I'd like to have seen a couple "screw ups" in the demo, though, just to see what it looks like when you miss a button press. (Perhaps I missed it?)

Wow!!! I hope that the footage showed a boss battle or something and that's why there was so much quicktime events? I agree with Kevin that I thought the game looked better when I saw pics of it last year and in the Fall Shane was saying it was the best looking game ever! But I did love me that Indigo Prophecy.... As far as this being the Killer App for the PS3, I love your enthusiasm Paul, and I share it, but this is not mass market game, even if it can out on the Wii. The PS3 is turning into the system for the hardcore who want FFXIII, TRICO, and God of War 3. 8)

I can't wait for this game to come out. Hopefully the story doesn't get as weird as Indigo Prophecy did towards the end..

The fight scene had the choreography of an old Star Trek episode (I was waiting for the Shatner Drop Kick), and the hero only walked away because the bad guy had some really shitty luck. They should show this video at construction sites to warn workers of the hazards of loose clothing. And the dialog in this clip doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence...

It finally implements something in games I've always longed for. Immediate emotionally guided response. I'm not sure if those are the right words to use but watch the video and you'll see what I mean. It's like there is a moment in one of those Splinter Cell games where some guy who pretrayed you is in the same room with you and you have small opportunity to kill him or not kill him. Moral choices are spread throughout GTAIV and Fallout 3, but its much different when you can't stop and think about things--you just react, as you would in real life. I think its genius. Some of the facial animation looks kind of "eugh?" but they have another 5 months to touch things up. I've never been more excited for a game I can't play (no ps3)!

I applaud Quantic Dreams for attempting something different -- in particular for trying to create an emotionally mature game -- but to be honest, the only thing I can think of watching these extended QTEs is, "I'd rather just watch a movie."

I can't wait to watch someone else play this game.

I'm not exactly sure what there is to be freaking out about here. If this is the game the story had better be pretty damn amazing to hold my interest, because the audio-visuals definitely won't (aside from the cool glasses thing, but that is a just a gimmick). Even though we can't possibly know the context of what is shown a scenario where this is interesting or cool escapes me, so I hope the developers have an infinitely better imagination than me. Now Trico, there's a game I touch myself over (and over).

The background blur is excessive, and there's very little detail in some of the textures (like the black car). Good lighting effects and very good motion capture. The voices don't match the characters very well, and the dialog sucks...and no, I'm not just trying to scare you with my big talk...it really sucks. Also, they use the exact same sound effect (a grunt) when he climbs out of the car and when he jumps off. Not very impressive, but I enjoyed Indigo Prophesy, and I respect David Cage as an artist enough to at least check it out.

It's games like these that renew my faith that somehow, somewhere, good people are being allowed to make good games. I just hope this sort of game catches on without becoming another horribly flooded genre.

I have mixed feeling about the game. I played and enjoyed the euro version of Indigo Prophesy (Fahrenheit) until the wheels fell off. The game did provide me with a bit of an emotional connection to the characters and their relationships. Heavy Rain shows promise in this regard. However, quick time events as the featured gameplay seems cheap. I feel like the game really wants to be an old school point and click adventure game but the devs lack the courage to ship something on a console that may look like less of a game because it lacks reactive, reflex centric button mash elements.

This game makes me wish I had a PS3. I played Indigo Prophecy last year and really enjoyed the different type of gameplay and presentation. Heavy Rain is looking bigger, better and more badass!

Ok, Gametrailers actually has much more of the beginning of this scene at the junk yard . . . I think 1UP put together or received a poor cut of the thing. The jilted dialog at the beginning of this video makes a bit more sense in context with how the scene begins. Full on five videos with some additional footage can be found here: http://www.gametrailers.com/game/heavy-rain-the-origami-killer/2717 I think the ARI system looks pretty interesting, and while I'm still not too hot on that detectives character model, this game does look pretty good in motion.

That video just killed all my interest in this game. I never want to see another QTE again after the craptastic abuse RE5 put us through.

I thought it was interesting how they put the quicktime button icons just about where your eye was and not smack dab in the center of the screen. While the animation was decent it felt a bit too mo-cappy. The voice acting also needed a lot of work, that or they needed to add some ambient noise so there isn't that awkward silence between dialogs.

With all these quick time events, this seems more like an interactive movie/art than the realistic game they were portraying it as. I just don't think this will live up to the hype, I like to control my games, not just watch them play out.

The game looks really interesting, and I don't have anything bad to say about the graphics. But, it looks like we are digressing back into the days of LaserDisc games. Hopefully, there are different combat situations.
