What DLC would have looked like in classic games

I remember the good old days when you were done paying for a game once you left a store. Now publishers force us to make multiple microtransactions to buy every map, character, level, skin, and a myriad of other "extras" before we can complete the experience. Still, downloadable content is a relatively new concept in gaming. Imagine if DLC had been around in a much simpler era.
