11 Virtual Boy ads to tide you over until the 3DS launch

This Sunday, the 3DS invades the U.S., promising to change how we think about handheld gaming. But it isn't Nintendo's first foray into 3D technology; that honor goes to the Virtual Boy, the most uncomfortable, unappealing, and unwieldy system ever constructed.

Just like the 3DS, advertising the Virtual Boy proved problematic because 3D doesn't come across in recorded footage. Nintendo's learned a lot since then.

1. Mad Max Beyond Virtual Boy

I'm now going to have nightmares about my Virtual Boy chasing me like some evil robotic chicken.

2. Watch Out!

"Want to play" sounds like a threat.

3. Virtual Boy Golf

This video really shows the limited appeal of the Virtual Boy, since it could only process two colors.

4. 32-Bits?

When you think 32-bit system, you probably don't have the Virtual Boy in mind.

5. Wario Land

This is on my list of actually playable Virtual Boy games.

6. Japanese Introduction Ad

The cheesy effects in this commercial do a decent job of conveying how the 3D works in most VB games.

7. Vertical Force

Games like this and Jack Bros. used depth perception in a very clever way.

8. Flying Heads

Beware: prolonged use of the Virtual Boy could lead to projectile decapitation.

9. Tetris

Because Tetris isn't hard enough when you can see what you're doing.

10. Sweepstakes

Despite the system's retail flop, Nintendo did put a lot of effort into marketing it.

11. Panic Bomber

Your system is irrelevant until it has a Bomberman game on it.

Hello Everyone. I would like to introduce myself. I am the one, and only, living gamer who enjoyed the Virtual Boy. I bought it on day one when released, and played the crap out of it. I never experienced any headaches, or made up fake excuses about how hard it was to play it. I was able to bring it with me everywhere I went, and never had a problem with its portability.

I still own it, and still play it regularly.

You are truly alone, Ed. I have one and find it completely uncomfortable. It's all about how I play games, I think. I like being able to relax and move around freely.

The 3DS may pose the same challenge in the end.

I have searched the earth for a decade trying to find someone like me...someone pro-Virtual Boy. I fear I may spend eternity alone!! Lol. Yeah, it just never bothered me. I must have played Wario Land a billion times on the Virtual Boy. Never once did I get a headache, or had a hard time focusing. It is seriously in my top 5 handhelds of all time along with the Neo Geo Pocket Color, PSP, GBA, and DS.

I have yet to see the 3DS in action, but I am sure I will not have a negative reaction like some people claim to have. I guess I just have a higher tolerance to this sort of thing. If you want to give me a serious headache, all you have to do is make me a play a portable game in a moving car.

Lol. I love watching these old ads. Too bad Nintendo isn't doing any more of these post-apocalyptic ads where the person's face gets forced onto the system. These ads are more entertaining than the 3DS ones.

The 3D effects of the 3DS will probably look much more convincing than the (lol) Virtual Boy. The games and capabilities of the system are also much more advanced. And there's more than two colors on the screen. I call that "winning," but I'm more interested in seeing how long it lasts. It's certainly powerful.

I've never played a Virtual Boy before, but I'm thinking I may have to track one down to play it. I'm curious.

Your search may be over, Ed, because I have a lot of fond memories of my Virtual Boy. Sure, it gave me a splitting headache and made me want to vomit after about an hour of play time, but pain builds character. Thanks to the VB, I can tolerate anything.

Except when women yell at me. That's still kind of scary.

I'll admit that I really wnated a Virtual Boy when it came out. I begged my Dad to get one, but in the end I settled for the Tiger R Zone - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIS2G9271qU

I'm sure my Dad was happy he saved himself a couple hundred dollars.

I like the Virtual Boy! I don't own one anymore, but I've been thinking about purchasing one for some time.
