Achievement Whores, Ho!!!!
If you're like me, then you enjoy getting achievements. The way I see it, achievements give me something to kill time with if I'm ever critically bored. But think about the core concept of an achievement, or a trophy at that matter. (although I don't own a PS3, therefore I will only use the term "achievement") Play this game for 5000 hours: congratulations, you officially wasted your life! To me, achievements like this aren't really achievements at all, they're essentially just a developer saying: "oh hey, guys, yeah everyone let's quickly fill out the last 500G for this game, yeah, just whatever comes to mind guys."
But in the case of the 360, you do indeed have achievements for EVERY game, and with that statement, a million achievement whores were born. Getting their hands on every last drop of gamerscore they can scope out, intentionally renting games that they can score an easy 1000, in five minutes at times. It's enough to make you want to cry, well not really but you get the point.
Now, straight to what I'm getting at. DLC, and achievements, what's the correlation in this situation, kids? when DLC is released, so is a few hundred points worth of gamerscore to accompany it. Which is all fine and dandy, gives the gamer more "challenges" to complete within the boundaries of said game world. But have you ever been persuaded to buy a certain DLC over a different DLC because either it offered more gamerscore, or easer earned gamerscore at that? Or bought DLC period because you had some extra MS points to blow, and you knew of a DLC that was pretty easy to whore up some extra G?

For, shame. Even popeye has succumbed to achievement whoring!
Well, I know people who do, and I as well have been tempted to buy DLC based off of this, sadly. I'm kind of a completionist, if possible. And it really angers me that when a DLC is released, it adds the gamerscore onto your list, and possibly makes you lose a game from your completed list. I know that gamerscore isn't really "worth" anything in reality, but losing that feeling of 100% completion, just makes me die a little bit on the inside.
This is why DLC can be used as a tactic, for gamers like these. It's like saying: "come open a bank account with this bank, and receive a FREE (shitty) gift!" But the gift in question being yet even more gamerscore, on top of more game. So it seems Microsoft has created a raging beast that desires more, and ever more fuel to be even close to being sated. But my question is, how long will achievements remain relevant? Eventually people will come to terms with achievements (hopefully) and just say: "You know, I really just want to play this game, who gives a rats ass about numbers displayed beside my name?"
Achievements aren't evil, by any means, but really, more and more they're beginning to really make me wish they would have never existed. Standards being put in place for what an achievement actually is, would be nice. Not just, finish level 1, YOU'RE GREAT! And I think DLC can be sold somewhat effectively to the audience who hungers for more achievements, or at least wants to get maximum G, no matter what. Which I disagree with.
But, that's just me. If it gets copies to sell, why not then! right? Just business after all!

I have mixed feelings about achievements. I like them as carrots on sticks that egg me on to strive to do more in games, like use all of the weapons, or go out of my way to experience a part of the game I might have otherwise ignored or not noticed.
But I admit, sometimes I choose to play one game over another on PS3 because it has trophies and another older one doesn't. >_< Not sure why, since I ought to just play games that are good for the sake of it, something that remains the case on Nintendo's console.
That said, sometimes I'll try games out for the sake of trophies only to realize that they're actually pretty fun and I might not have given them a shot.
So, yea. It's very mixed for me, but some people I feel take it too far and forget to enjoy the games themselves. I never try to get a trophy that feels like work for more than 5 minutes. xD
