Around the world in 80 video games

Heroes journey to amazing alien worlds and parallel dimensions all the time, but some of the most extraordinary locations in the galaxy are right here on planet Earth.

Join my epic, eight-part adventure as I travel to 80 landmarks and touristic attractions from all over the big, blue marble as seen in retro video games.

Bad Dudes vs. DragonNinja
Bad Dudes vs. DragonNinja: President Ronnie pays his rescuers with burgers at the White House, Washington DC.

Super Buster Bros.
Super Buster Bros.: A kid plays with his balls at the Borobudur Temple in Central Java, Indonesia.

The NewZealand Story
The NewZealand Story: A pack of kiwis gathers at the Auckland zoo in New Zealand. One of them is clearly smoking pot.

Rage of the Dragons
Rage of the Dragons: Elias knocks some holy sense into Alice inside an Irish cathedral.

8 Eyes
8 Eyes: Orin and Cutrus face a giant swordsman in the Arabian Peninsula. I will not mention that "orín" means "urine" in Spanish. I won't.

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?: A merchant in a 75 cents hat has not seen a silverback gorilla in Kigali, Rwanda.

Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame
Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame: The prince ends his miserable life by jumping off a cliff somewhere in Iran.

Samurai Shodown
Samurai Shodown: Wan-Fu and Earthquake do the "rain dance" in Cangshan, China.

Taz-Mania
Taz-Mania: The sun in Tasmania's outback is so hot that it causes hallucinations. Birds don't really crap pixie dust.

The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles
The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles: Before nuking the fridge in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, young Indy "jumped the grenade" in Chihuahua, Mexico.

This will be a massive undertaking, but I can't wait to see what you pull out for Canada. I would suggest MDK2. The first level takes place over Edmonton, which is pretty rare in terms of game locations.

I'll try to stick to 2D games, but if I run out of pixelated locations I'll dig in my N64, PS, and old computer games collection. Canada won't get shunted.

Huge undertaking! You're kinda crazy, but I love it.

This is a really cool idea. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the games/locations.

I came up with the idea after playing Killer Instinct 2 the other day. Tusk's stage is one of my favorite in the game.

I don't know if I'll be able to stop when I reach game #80....

In Cruis'n USA, Iowa is still the best racing level ever made. No other arcade game permits me to run over so many cows. They even explode into a pile of flying meat. Take that, PETA. Lol.

The exploding meat even returned in Cruis'n World. Man, I wish Nintendo didn't censor such an awesome portion of the game.

Speaking of Canada, Puffin: Island Adventure may be the only game to feature Newfoundland. But then again, it is a DS kids game. So.....

I found a couple of nice Canadian locations while I was doing research yesterday. One of them being Sasquatch's stage from DarkStalkers (thanks to Michael Rousseau).

That stated, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is very Toronto-centric. Lovingly so, in fact. Perhaps that's a candidate?

If Samir neglects to include Scott Pilgrim, I'll cut him.

Hmm. Mudman reminds me of Tam Tam from Samurai Shodown. SNK needs more masked warriors in their King of Fighters series.

Speaking of which, that's a clever screenshot of KOF '96. I wouldn't have ever thought about that connection between Kim's flying kicks and the slippery floor. I still wonder how he pulls off all of his moves. He must be one of those hardcore Tae Kwon Do freaks.

And Oro...yeah. He bothers me. Lol.

Perhaps Kim learned his Hangetsuzan kick by slipping on that wet floor. Now I want to know how Earthquake learned his poison-fart throw.

Let's just stay away from Oro....

Thank goodness someone's defending Australia in an alien invasion. I always thought we would be strategically left to be conquered while the rest of the world fired nukes at us.

Don't worry, buddy. These guys got your back!

Y'know, I almost forgot how awesome this game was! I rented it with my brother a long time ago and we really wanted to buy it someday. We never got around to it, but I love all the wacky one-liners. Haha.

I love the locales in Street Fighter Alpha 3. I wish that the new Street Fighter games kept the Greece stage, because it had that nice, rustic architecture to it.

They should have kept R. Mika too. Her wacky costume was pretty attractive.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 had a ton of cool stages, but I wonder why Cammy's background was Greece instead of England. Maybe M. Bison bought her a home there for the summer.

If Bowser has no genitalia, how did he end up with a son? I just had to ask.

Did he and Peach...? Nah. No way.

this was such a good $^&*@# idea Samir. Great job!

Thanks, Sam, but...holy shit has this been tough to do. Halfway there!

I don't remember many motorcyclists in Alaska. I also don't remember a terrorist base on Shadow Moses Island. Hahahaha.

I should write a story on how Shadow Moses Island doesn't look anything like it does in Metal Gear Solid. Nuclear weapons and giant robots? Kojima sure has quite an imagination.

Are you implying that the events in Metal Gear Solid are...fictitious?

Lol. Just maybe. I do believe that Grey Fox is that good at deflecting bullets, though. All ninjas are badasses. It's a 24/7 profession.

So...Strider Hiryu vs. Grey Fox. Who would win?

I'd vote on Ryu Hayabusa.

I didn't know that Indiana Jones really wanted to become Simon Belmont. In Mexico.

I'd play more Castlevania games if they took their whip fighting into Mexico. Or Tokyo. Aria of Sorrow tried to plug in a protagonist from Neo Tokyo, but I wanted to see more backgrounds from Japan.

Sigh. Someday Konami will give me multiple vampires around the world. In Tibet. And the Vatican.

That NewZealand Story game looks wacky. I didn't know that it was okay to show cute chickens smoking cigarettes. Lol.

Mindjack
April 16, 2012

We certainly need a vampire killer in the Vatican.

Did you play Castlevania: Lords of Shadow? We might get a modern day bat-slaying adventure, and maybe it will take place in Mexico. Why not?

I'll probably get around to Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. That would be awesome, to see Belmont in Mexico. But first, it's time for Xenoblade. XD

Castlevania: Bloodlines earned a little respect for France; that stage was gorgeous.  Thank you for learning me stuff, Samir.  I are am enthusiamastic.

It's been a long-ass trip. David Niven and Cantinflas need their beauty sleep.
