It seems that the only time I write articles for Bitmob, is when I am ready to make a snap judgment/scathing indictment about a particular facet of Nerd/Geek culture. I wish I got angrier more often though, because the only time I ever feel that the articles that I write are worth a damn is when there is some passion behind them. That being said, let's get into it shall we?
Today, on the first full day of Comic-Con, I watched as my social sub-culture set my rage ablaze with how entitled they all seemed to be where they were. Comic-Con, for those of you who have no idea, is one of the largest displays of pop-culture and nerdom that there is on the planet. It is hosted in my home town of San Diego. So I started my day in line to pick up my badge to get around the different areas of the convention. If you remember the negative space between and electron and the nucleus of an atom from 8th grade, double that, and you have the line to get your badge if you were as stupid as I was. That's when the entitlement began.
Case 1: "We paid for this/waited for this, where's our free stuff."
I don't know what happened to society that we have lost all patience, nor do I know where the idea came from that every single person who was told to wait for something should then get some sort of compensation for having to wait, but that mindset needs to be eliminated. People need to take a breath and calm down, and realize that things will be ok in the universe if they don't get in to every single thing they planned. Yes it sucks that you didn't get into the panel/event you wanted to get into, but that blame does not get put on anyone else but yourself. Most of the times you can solve your problems by getting to the place a little earlier.
Case 2: "If I am courteous I wont get what I am looking for."
I read comics...duh, and Comic-Con is a great place for me, because I read trade paperbacks, or collections of comics bound in a single volume. Today, there were booths that were selling trades for 50 percent off cover price, meaning I was going to drop roughly 100 bucks on comics. A lot of the books were in long comic boxes in random order so that if you had a particular volume that you were looking for, you had to go through long boxes. Let's face it we are not an anorexic sub-culture (myself included), but if you can then try and help a person out. I met some really cool people today by simply asking the person to the left or right of me if they had gone through the box that I was going through and if they wanted me to keep an eye out for anything for them. I helped 5 people find books they were looking for and 3 people returned the favor. Let's take the time and help each other out and we might just make a friend. Bitmob is a site for gamers you say? Ok let me break it down to a language gamers can understand, I was at the Capcom area today trying out Street Fighter x Tekken and there were probably 6 cabinets ready for people to play on and a line waiting to get on them. One guy apparently thought we were at EVO 2K11 and that this was the king of the hill tournament because he had a death grip on his fight stick that could have put a python to shame. Apparently, he was under the impression that it was winner stays, he was not the only one however, he was just the most vocal when the staff kicked him off. Started making a fuss that it was crap (censored) that he had to get off and that it was still his turn. I just shook my head and asked myself why?
OBJECTION! "But if I just give people everything or move over I wont get anything I want"
So take but you want but if someone is looking for something you don't care about help a friend out and just point them in the right direction.
Third Case: "Let people do their jobs"
Never have I felt worse for an employee then I have for the staff and security at Comic-Con, and I work retail customer service. The situation that really set me off on this category was the multiple accounts of security or staff telling attendees that they couldn't sit somewhere and the attendee getting upset one had the gall to say "Do you see this badge? This means I can pretty much go wherever I want, I paid to be here," I stood there and I was waiting for the staff member to get security to throw the guy out...it didn't happen. I saw a staff member, loose their cool on an attendee after telling the person to move politely finally just saying "MOVE!" the attendee said "You can't tell me to move like that!" the attendee used some harsh language again pushing my rage limit to almost to above boiling. I reiterate my case title, could we just let people do their jobs so that we can have a smooth convention and we can all be safe time, I would like that, maybe I am alone in this though.
Final Case: "Women and Children first."
Today I saw a guy beat a kid in a game of Yu-Gi-Oh at the Konami booth and start celebrating like he just won something important, like a national championship. I saw a child get pushed out of the way so that someone could get a poster that the kid was going to grab this wasn't an exclusive poster either, it wasn't anything crazy just a poster variant of Marvel Vs Capcom 3 box art done in a Marvel Mini style. I just couldn't believe the things I was seeing.
Closing Statements
I am no saint, nor am I someone who is perfect, but I do think I am more conscious of my surroundings then a lot of the people who are roaming the floor of Comic-Con. Maybe my observations are singular in nature and I haven't a leg to stand on, but I was moved to write an article to completion, which so rarely happens that I had to put it out there. Let me get hypocritical for a second and say "Look out for #1 just look out for numbers 2 and 3 as well." Have some common courtesy and make some friends and enjoy conventions. Two years ago I spoke on hygiene and this year year I speak on dropping the entitled attitudes at the door and being courteous. Maybe I'll start a bi-yearly series of observations from an enraged convention attendee.
Again I leave this article open for discussion and if you think I am an idiot let me know...just do it in a courteous and concise manner...
