Fast and Furious: A Shadow Complex Twitter Tale

Editor's note: Shoe and I had just arrived to record the next episode of The Mobcast with Shadow Complex's Donald Mustard and 1UP's David Ellis when we learned about this story -- from the game's PR person, Donald's wife, Laura! Not only did Carlos get a Shadow Complex code, he also got a second code. And he's giving it away to the Bitmob community. Read on to find out how! -Jason

Tuesday night was crazy. I got to meet people who I admire in the industry: longtime game journalists Geoff Keighley and N'Gai Croal, Universal producer Pete Wanat, and Chair Entertainment creative director and lead designer Donald Mustard (Shadow Complex) and his wife, Laura. Before doing so, though, I had to drive out to Los Angeles -- an hour or so away from my humble home in Rialto, CA.

My brother, J-Rock, and I rolled out to meet Keighley and friends as soon as he threw up the bat signal for a free Shadow Complex code.

Some thought it was unfair to actually have to meet the guy for a prized ticket because Geoff had been giving out game codes on his Twitter feed.

Translation: Putting shoes, panks (yes, that's a "k"), and grabbing keys right now. But before I tied my shoelaces -- bunny-ears style -- I asked:

Reservation confirmed.

And the race was on. I had to refuel the gas tank. Shhh! Just say we're closer than we really are.

J-Rock and I were going so fast that by the time that we sent the Highway 210 update, we were well on our way to the connecting Interstate 605. That's 15 miles past Glendora.

Ummm...not really?

We got off on the wrong exit! J-Rock asked a hardcore-looking cholo where Melrose was.

"It's down three streets that way, ey."

We burned rubber.

Time was ticking. The bat signal was fading. My Hyundai Elantra's speedometer quickly raised from the speed limit to a modest 60 mph on the streets of Melrose.

Our only cheerleader hoped that we made it:

And made it! We arrived to a round of applause from the industry crowd that greeted us.

Back home after an overjoyed, completely safe and legal drive....

I had to beat the traffic and make a 90-minute drive in 45 minutes, but guess what? Geoff gave me an extra Shadow Complex code to give away to a friend -- they didn't have to do that!

Luckily for you guys, my closest friends are PS3 owners (yeah, I know, boo!), so I plan to give it out to a random Bitmob reader. Leave a comment below and/or on my own personal site. I'll probably keep the giveaway going until Friday night at 9 p.m. PST -- and e-mail the winner with the code to get the game in time for the weekend.

Thanks goes out to my brother for making the drive a bit more safe than it would've otherwise been by replying to Geoff on my cellphone (directly linked to Twitter updates through Skynet) along the way.

And, of course, thanks also go out to Geoff, N'Gai, Pete (who gave me an apropos The Fast and the Furious Trilogy Blu-ray pack upon my arrival), Donald, and Laura for patiently waiting for me after they'd been kicked out of Comme Ca

[UPDATE: A winner appears! Ryan Schuster won the code. Thanks for reading and all the great comments everyone.]

That's pretty awesome of them to keep to their word. I actually just assumed that they were joking around because, really, who in their right mind would stand up to a challenge on Twitter? Congrats on getting a code and meeting industry folks, I hope you're enjoying it!;)

Good work. It'd have been quite a longer drive for me, but I'm glad someone had the dedication.

I’m just thinking, and this might just be me, but do you think the gas money would cost more than Shadow Complex? Aside from that, congrats! You also met Geoff and N’Gai too! That Fast and Furious thing is HILARIOUS!

Nicely done dude! I live in Santa Barbara and thought people would be all over this, but I should have just grabbed my car keys like you did! Congratulations!

That sounds like an opportunity of a life-time! Congratulations! I have always wanted to meet actual game developers, Geoff Keighly and game analysts. You are really lucky to see them, something you will be very proud about, I’m glad to know you feel the journey is just as much as worth it and seriously THANK YOU for making/posting a blog about this experience because coming from someone living in an isolated part of the UK (and events/opportunities such as this are entirely non-existant) I love reading such exciting user experiences. I sincerly hope you look back at this experience sometime in the future as a happy one and enjoy the game!

Lucky you! I aws just in California last week for vacation, stayed in norwalk, probably would have taken me just as long to get there, but alas I am back in Pennsylvania. Enjoy the game, I wish I could too.

I feel like I miss all the action because I live on the East Coast. Closest city to me is Washington D.C., and we all know nothing useful gets developed there... :P

I'd love a copy, both because of the intense adventure behind it and because I have some friends who are for some reason prejudiced against buying XBLA games but who I know would LOVE SC! Great story.

This story is extra hilarious to us. Jason Wilson and I were in the Mustards' hotel room to record next week's Mobcast when Laura asked us how funny this all was. We didn't know what she was talking about (we hadn't read your story yet), and she actually pulled up this post on her laptop to show us and told us the whole story. We knew we had to promote your post right away! :) Thanks for putting it on Bitmob. @ "a guest" above: Your names aren't showing up right because you have some illegal characters (probably quotation marks) in your name you registered with. Change that and you should be OK!

@Kaillif Yeah, that refuel cost me $15, so it was about equal to just buy the game outright. For me, it was more to meet these guys and hang out for a bit though. @Demian Yup, still rockin' it. Very cool to finally meet him. @Shoe Thanks for promoting the article! Really appreciate the edits...I'm comparing it to my original draft to improve future writings :)

Another comment just to say that was entertaining to read and a cool story to boot. I'm a non-drawing entry as well, already bought and downloaded Shadow Complex.

It's all about the fun, not the financial comparisons. This is where I'd do something outrageous and awesome to claim the second code - except you foolishly said "random", thereby breaking the chain of doing crazy stuff to give it out. But you are giving to Bitmob, so it's not like you're wasting it. Cheers!

Congrats, Ryan! Although, this was the last competition I could get a Shadow Complex code from... Oh well. Congrats man. Random.org sucks! :( I spent a lot of time writing my entry and then I find out it goes in Random.org? I would've just said "code nao lolz" if I knew that. Regardless, thanks for the opportunity, Carlos. Congrats on your code, mostly, because that drive must've been hella scary.
