Help wanted: We need two new editors

Shoe_headshot_-_square

(Yes, this post has a few grammatical errors in it. Its intentional! Can you find them all? Though please do not post your findings in the comments below. See below for why.)

Sure, we take great pride in the fact that working at Bitmob can lead to greater opportunities (see Brett Bates, whose now the community manager on Dragon Age Legends...or a few community writers whose posts here have lead to paid freelance jobs). But man, we sure don't like the extra work left behind for us when staffers have to say goodbye.

We're currently looking for two volunteer editors to join our team. If you have some free time on your hands and would like to take a step closer to being an official part of our industry, please read on....

What we need:

  • We need someone who has a strong command of the English language, is very familiar with most basic rules of grammar, and is anal as hell (attention to detail is a must!). You don't have to have any professional experience, but if you don't know what a comma splice is, for example, or how to catch one, then this gig probably isn't for you...unless you're an amazing learner. We will teach you some of the rules and styles that we follow but anyone we bring on should be able to internalize such lessons and be able to apply them consistently to any Bitmob work.
  • We need someone who has a strong work ethic, whom we can depend on to edit three to five stories a week from the community or the staff.
  • We need someone with decent knowledge of the gaming world. You might have to fact-check the stories that you write, so you must be familiar enough with the subject matter to catch any potential problems.

What we can offer you:

  • Fame! Well, not a lot of it but for many people, it'll do. You get to be an official part of the Bitmob staff, that means you'll get some early access to games (for you to write about), the chance to attend some industry events (pressers, parties, E3, and the like), and possible opportunities to get paid work from our content partners (like EGM...if they like you).
  • Knowledge! We promise you that you'll be a better editor and/or writer after you go through a few weeks of Bitmob boot camp/training. We've had more than one professional editor or writer tell us that they’ve learned more from working with us for a few weeks than they have at their real-life jobs or in their educational careers.

If you're interested:

  1. Send an email to letters [at] bitmob [dot] com with the subject head: Bitmob Editor.
  2. In your email, please list at least five of the six errors that I've intentionally placed in this post. Hey, if you find more than six, good for you! That means I screwed up, and your probably the right guy for this job.
  3. Let us know why you'd like to join the Bitmob team. We're only interested in those who are truly passionate about this business and want to help make this site better!

I was looking for a good reason to boot up my ancient laptop tonight. I think I found it.

By the way, I'm one of the people that has learned more about editing in eight months on the job here than in my whole college career (print journalism degree). I thought I was good until Shoe and the crew set me straight.

I too have a journalism degree! News/editorial and photography. Also minored in Japanese. I know my editing skills could be better, but I'm always trying to improve them by talking to the copy editor here and reading my AP book.

Ditto Layton (though, minus the degree). I think becoming a better writer has been the biggest reward.

Increasing knowledge of grammar is like rocket fuel for both improving the self and inflating the ego. :)

Maybe, but August Wilson won a Pulitzer by undermining what we know about grammar. So did Suzan-Lori Parks. It's THEIR fault that I'm awful at the basic rules of punctuation now. Seriously, Parks has an essay called "The New Black Math" and it's in bullet points. I can't even imagine how fast they'd throw me out of school if I turned in bullet points and called it an essay.

Steven: There are reasons to break some rules...but not many. And when you're a website that features many different writers from all walks of life, it's important to have a lot of stuff standardized. Consistency = professional.

Blog
May 17, 2011

Yeah, I'm a part of the system, you don't have to convince me. I was being dry. Very, very, very dry.

Christian_profile_pic
May 18, 2011

Also worth noting that you still need to know/understand the rules in order to break them.

Blog
May 18, 2011

Christian, let's be fair, you need to understand the rules to break them WELL. Have you seen the internet? People break the rules all the time and they CLEARLY don't know them. But, yes, I agree. One of the things we explain to students is this: they're not famous enough to be glib or informal in a scholarly paper. You're allowed to do all kinds of great stuff once you prove you're doing it on purpose--if you haven't earned that authority you wind up with half the group getting you and the other half being sort of put-off by your voice.

Christian_profile_pic
May 18, 2011

Well, this might just be a semantic argument, but I think there's a difference between breaking rules and ignroing them. Breaking the rules without knowing them isn't rebellion; it's ignorance.

But, yeah, I totally agree with your point.

I think the disconnect between what I post and what people read is that I'm often employing a very dry sense of humor that gets buried by the fact that I also usually have something to say. When the two collide people can't tell that I'm sometimes agreeing with them by being flippant. It's not a semantic argument because I'm not arguing. I'm using soft words to lambast a culture of text-message scholarship.

Christian_profile_pic
May 18, 2011

I wasn't trying to suggest that you were arguing with me. When I said "argument" I just meant that I was making an opnionated distinction that, basically, agreed with you.

Blog
May 18, 2011

Wait. Are you saying that my assertion that you were arguing with me wasn't true? I feel a comical paradox has been reached and we should both agree not to disagree here. (as the saying goes)

Ok, that's as dry as I can possibly get. Thanks for playing along.

Also, I call shenanigans on this test. Mine was waaaaaaaaaaaay harder! It looked like it was written by a drunk six-year-old who was two weeks into picking up English as a second language.

YE GODS I CAN'T UNSEE IT

Shoe_headshot_-_square
May 17, 2011

Haha, yeah, I remember that. I needed something quick 'n' easy, since I don't have a Jason anymore to help me go through the submissions. I think this will be easier for me to sort through initially. Possible more tests later!

Nick_whale
May 18, 2011

I thikn this current "test" might actually be trickier. It's much more subtle.

Nick_whale

Oh, and my last comment was a grammatical test, too. Yeah, that's it....

D'oh! My one weakness! I was never good at all that fancy shmancy grammar. I have been told I am a good writer, but I make a hell of a lot of mistakes. It used to bother me, but not anymore after I saw a few of my favorite writers of all time talk about how absolutely dreadful they are with grammar. It is sort of like Einstein being horrible at math.

I'm not horrible but I need more practice.

You know--you'd think after years of training I'd feel more confident in situations like this. I never do. I submitted, but then thought to myself, "they let me teach at the college level and I'm not even sure I edited 500 words properly."

Humiliating.

When can people expect to hear back? I explained my limited Internet and phone service access I'll have at the end of the month while driving to Wisconsin from Alaska, so in case I'm chosen, I'd like to know when to keep a look out. Thanks!

We don't have a real timeline on this, sorry. If I were to guess, maybe we'd weed out applicants by this weekend, contact our faves early to mid next week to give them additional testing? Depends on how busy we are, though. :\

That sounds good. I was just wondering after I sent you guys the email last night. I'll just make sure to keep an eye out when I can. Driving through Alaska and Canada can be a pain if you're tyring to stay connected... or sleep in a bed for that matter.
