How I Would Save Phantasy Star.

P.S.USega just announced that they are releasing a new expansion for Phantasy Star Universe. They are also giving it away for free, and also making the old expansion free!

Anyone.... Anyone? All I hear are crickets and World of Warcraft players laughing. Hmm.

Now, I am a huge Phantasy Star Online fan. I played it on the Dreamcast, Gamecube and Xbox. I even played the Dreamcast version in multiple forms. Everytime I played with characters that I spent at least 80 hours building up. I think you could call that hardcore. I would love to say that I was a huge fan of Universe. but they messed up it up. Big time.

From making the "star" of the single player campaign one of the most annoying snowboarder "freakz" possible, to not giving you access to key features until way too late in the game- Universe took many of the best aspects of P.S.O and threw them out of the window.

Now, I can understand the desire to stem cheating by not letting you play your personally created online character offline. But really, who truly gets hurt by people who would rather cheat and profit than play and feel a true sense of reward? I say kill the lame disconnect between the online and the offline.

Giving away free content was a cool move, but not the right move. I say lower the price for the subscription fee, or better yet, remove it completely. I would rather pay for extra content than pay a monthly fee for an "MMO" that is really only "massive" when you are in a lobby. Otherwise, the game is just 4 player co-op. They could even take some steps to limit lobby size- by removing the need for smaller in-world lobbies and giving people who are grouped up their own personal lobby which is run peer-to-peer.

If you remove the subscription fee, then you could charge for new missions and still make good money. Put out a pack of five to ten every month for $5 to $10, and charge for some exclusive weapons, clothes and accessories. That way you have MORE avenues for earning money and more INCENTIVE for players to come back and try it again after taking a break. Also, you might get people who come back and buy tons of missions and content, in essence charging them for all the time the missed... if they feel like it.

You are welcome, Sega. You can send a check my way whenever.

I just recently played through Phantasy Star Universe, while it was okay, I certainly didn't see a reason to play it for more then a few weeks. I loved Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 and 2, but like the side scrolling brawler, I think this kind of game just doesn't deliver enough for the current generation.

I agree though, wipe the subscription fee, keep charging for the DLC.

I'd fix Phantasy Star by bringing it back to the realm of single-player RPGs. How needs more MMOs?

It seems to me that the current market of coopertive action RPG's have made the PSO franchise irrelevant. It's made even more evident by the fact that they insist on a monthly fee. It's competition isnt World of Warcraft or the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic. The competition consists of fee-less titles like Monster Hunter TRI and Borderlands. I've never paid the monthly fee. I stuck with version 1 and spent hours upon hours playing splitscreen on the Gamecube.

Don't get me wrong though. I loved it while it lasted, but I'm with Jason on this one. Gimmie Phantasy Star V (based on the current trend... they'ed probably just call it "Phantasy Star").

I'm a huge Phantasy Star fan. I have almost every copy of PSO and PSU, including some limited edition imports and art books. But I have to agree with you that PSU was a step back from what PSO was.

PSO had a basic formula of making your hero, adventuring, and collecting loot. That was pretty much the premise for the entire game. Everybody who has played PSO has said the same thing about it: It was awesome. However, when you look at PSU's structure, it's too complex for something so little in return. You had to level up all your skills by spamming the Y/Triangle button for hours. You had to synthesize items in your room which could actually end up destroying your items if it failed (unlike the mag where you could feed that thing anywhere --- and get character stats in return).

I'm also on board with the idea of scrapping the monthly fee entirely. Phantasy Star needs to return to it's simplistic values. Hell, even giving the fans a Phantasy Star V would be okay too.

You know, I should have mentioned that if anyone wants to play Phantasy Star done much better than they managed in auniverse, then they should try Phantasy Star Zero for DS. It was really good actually.

Phantasy Star Portable 2 on PSP is a huge improvement as well. It added some features from Zero and mixed it up into a simpler version of PSU.

Every time someone mentions Phantasy Star Online I will point out that you can in fact still play it - for free. http://www.schtserv.com/

I just want Sega to properly localize the Sega Ages versions of the Phantasy Star Remakes(http://hardcoregaming101.net/segaages/segaages5.htm), hell, give them even MORE enhancements and HD, and release them on all downloadable platforms(Steam and WiiWare included)!

While Zero plays just fine, it suffers froms the same generic anime bs as PSU. I mean seriously, who wants to play as a four foot tall hunter anyways?
