My PS3 is Actively Trying to Keep Me from Playing Games

One week in trying to play inFAMOUS 2.

I haven't had a lot of game play time recently, and might not have much in the near future, so the last two weeks have been an orgy of gaming. I really wanted to play a PS3 game...

Sunday Night

11 PM: Finish SpecOps: The Line on the PC. Emotionally drained, I decide it's time for something lighter from my backlog pile.

Monday Night

8 PM: inFAMOUS 2 seems like a good choice. I enjoyed the first game. Unwrap game, insert in PS3, turn on.

8:05 PM: Why doesn't this start at 'play the game'? Shouldn't that be your primary function? Find 'play the game' in XBM, hit X.

8:06 PM: 'You need to download 4 updates for this game.' Well crud. I could skip them, but these days you don't want to skip a fix for something that could break your save game and leave you unable to finish. Okay, download.

8:15 PM: This is taking a while... it's only at 1%.

8:16 PM: Unwrap Gears of War 3, put in in the XBox 360. It boots to 'X to play the game or Y for game info'. I hit Y and 'install to hard drive'.

8:21 PM: GoW3 is completely installed to hard drive. Hit A to Play.

8:22 PM: There is a patch for this game. You must download it. Okay, okay.

8:25 PM: Patch downloaded, installed. Play game.

11:?? PM: I've finished the entire first act of Gears of War 3. The PSN updates aren't done downloading. I shut off the XBox 360, leave the PS3 downloading, go to sleep.

Tuesday Morning

Well, the PS3 is in hibernation. It probably finished.

Tuesday Night

Start installing Max Payne 3 on the PC, all 30 gigs (!). Keep playing Gears.

Thursday Night

Finish Gears of War 3. Start Max Payne 3.

Monday Night

Finish Max Payne 3. Tomorrow, I'll play inFAMOUS 2. It's already installed and updated!

Tuesday Night

9:00 PM: Okay, time for inFAMOUS 2! Also, Papa and Yo is out today, that's getting good reviews. Boot the PS3.

9:01 PM: 'Sorry, you need to fsck [check your hard drive for errors] your PS3. I'm rebooting. You have no choice.' WHAT? Well, okay.

9:05 PM: 'What's new?' 'Papa and Yo *click*'. 'There is a mandatory system update.' ... Well okay.

9:15 PM: Damn, only 5% done? Wander off.

9:16 PM: Download Dynamite Jack from Steam - it's in my backlog pile.

9:18 PM: Dynamite Jack is done, start playing. It starts pretty simple, but then gets more fiendish.

9:40 PM: Whoops, better check the PS3.

9:41 PM: PS3: 'There was an error downloading the update, we aborted..' (Hint: It was not my network.) Restart the download.

9:42 PM: More Dynamite Jack

10:30 PM: Check the PS3 again. Oh my god, it's done! Okay, Papa and Yo.

10:31 PM: Oho Papa and Yo is normally $15, but it's on sale for $12, I guess Sony learned from Valve's launch sales! Buy!

10:32 PM: 'Ha ha ha, you're not a PS+ member. We're not going to give you the sale price unless you upgrade to PS+ right now. Why not pay $50/yr for the stellar network performance you've just experienced?'  Suddenly, the game I'd normally pay $15 for looks like a bad deal when the $12 sale is yanked out from under me. I realize that Sony's only made the game seem less appealing, yet can't overcome it. Cancel. Exit PS Store.

10:35 PM: Find 'play the game' and hit X.

10:36 PM: Mandatory install for inFAMOUS 2 - it goes fairly fast, at least!

10:40 PM: The game is installed, title screen comes up.. Hit start new game just to test the waters... Continue save game with good karma... We have cutscene! I feel like we just landed a rover on Mars.

10:45: Time for bed.

Wednesday?

We'll see. I might even be able to play the game today. And it only took nine days.

Didn't we make jokes about this at the start of this console generation, thinking those were ludicrous hyperbole? Next thing you know we'll be downloading buggy updates for our cars! Hahahaha, no way!

11:00pm: Turn on my Xbox 360 to see what's up in the store

11:03pm: Still waiting for my friends list to load...

11:05pm: It took forever, but friends list finally loaded, now trying to check out the store.

11:10pm: Well, its been 5 minutes and I can't find the games. Jeez there are a billion Advertisments everywhere! I can't find anything! How the hell does it take 5 minutes to find recently released games! Screw this, what the hell am I paying for when all I am getting is Advertised to!?!?! I'll just play some more 'Splosion Man.

11:15pm: Finally found where my games were located.

11:17pm: The Xbox took over 2 minutes to load my list of games...Jeez why the hell does it take so long to load a friggin list!?

11:20pm: Finally launched 'Splosion Man, needs an update, and since Microsoft severely limits the size of updates developers can release, it is quick to download, but developers are often screwed since they are severely limited by Microsoft's size limits. Ok, I am at the title screen and....All my saves are gone? What the hell?

11:25pm: Google why everytime I launch a game on my Xbox 360 that I haven't played in a year, all of my saves are gone. Find out that it happens to a lot of people, nobody knows why, and Microsoft hasn't fixed it yet. Screw this, I'll just rent a movie.

11:30pm: Spent another 5 minutes trying to find where the movies are, so many Advertisments everywhere that I literally can't make heads or tails of anything. Screw this, I'm turning on my PS3.

11:32pm: Turn on PS3, quickly and effortlessly go to the store, look at new games, dicsounts, movies, prices, everything. Since there aren't 6 bajillion ads everywhere, I find a game I want and download it. That game is Oddworld: Strangers Wrath.

11:33pm: 10 minutes later, the game is done downloading. I then notice that PS Plus has updated all of its Free games. And am amazed to see that for my $50 yearly subscription I can now download for free Just Cause 2, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, Infamous 2, Warhammer: Space Marine, Outland, Saints Row 2, Bloodrayne Betrayal, Little Big Planet 2, Renegade Ops, Pacman DX Champion Edition, Sideways: New York, Choplifter HD, and the two new Episodes of The Walking Dead game...Wow, Add on to that all the other free awesome games I have downloaded since becoming a PS Plus member, and I have over $800 of great, AAA free games for the $50 I spent on the subscription. Wow.

11:40pm: With so many awesome free games at my fingertips, I am overwhelmed and can't decide what to play. I set my PS3 to download them all during the night.

Next Day

9:00am: Overnight, I now have 14 New games on my hard drive, with more to come every few weeks. Why do I even bother with the Xbox 360? I pay more than $50 a year for Xbox Live, and all I get is 6 bajillion Ads, load times that take FOREVER, and cross game chat. For the same price on the PS3, I get a metric shit ton of free AAA games, discounts, and a super easy, super streamlined interface that doesn't bombard you with Advertisments.

10:00am: Shows up at Gamestop, and trades in Xbox 360.

10:01am: Forgets that while the Xbox 360 is junk and I hate almost everything about it, I still like Gears of War and want to play the new one.

10:02am: Buys back Xbox 360, puts it in a corner at home until Gears of War Judgement releases.

10:03am: Somehow made it home in under a minute, turns on PS3, and begins playing all the new games that have been downloaded...They're all awesome.

While some things are time consuming on the PS3 and it seems some consoles are very finicky with system updates (my first one, my new one has never had an issue), your gripe with PS+ is a moot one, as illustrated by the commenter above me.
I've never had a game install take longer than an hour unless there was an error with something - this happened once. LittleBigPlanet is about the longest one I've ever endured, and that took about 45 minutes.
Let's face it - video game journalism and it's outlets, like BitMob, is not the place for fanboys or people who don't know how to work their console (the default setting on PS3s is to launch a game on insertion, which means it's your fault it didn't launch when you put the disc in).
Not that the commenter was a whole lot better - his hyperbole was almost as bad as yours (which was brutally inaccurate - no one has ever had to download a system update after clicking on something in the store, nor has anyone ever experienced nine days between any given Sunday and the following Wednesday), but (s)he's a commenter, and we've come to expect no less.

Guys, I have one of most of the systems. I don't really care about your little PS3/X360/Wii/PC system wars. This /happened to me in the last two weeks/, and since all the other systems were working just fine it really stood out as keeping me from playing a game I actually wanted to play that was a PS3 exclusive.

My PS3 doesn't play games when you insert them - it just goes to XMB on power up, and the default is not to play the game in the drive. The Xbox 360 goes to menu as well, but at least the default button press is to play the game in the drive. I have other horrible things I can say about the Xbox 360 menus, but they let you play the game in one click.

Yes, you will get a mandatory update if you try to buy something in the store, because logging in and getting into the store causes the mandatory update - once you're in, selecting a game to buy will of course not cause a mandatory system update. It happened.

My point was that of all the game machines that I own (I didn't mention the Wii, but the Wii doesn't have an issue there either),  the only one that seems to require pre-planning to play a game is the PS3 (or certain MMOs on the PC, 20 gigs of updates, woohoo). The games are great, that's not the issue.

All this happened. This is not some hypothetical scenario. And I know other people who own PS3s. This is not a rare thing - though inFAMOUS 2 seems to be worse than others. It's not a pro-XBox 360 thing, though I realize in your world X360/PS3 may be a zero sum game. I've got puh-lenty of complaints about X360 - but last week wasn't one of them.
