This comic proves that the 3DS is not a luxury item

A lot of people are complaining about the 3DS' $250 price. These people are clearly not as balling as I am. $250's nothing. Here, let me put it in perspective for you with a delightful comic:

This comic is class warfare.

Yeah, Mike, it all depends on your income level. Luxury goods are all relative to the buyer. For the vast majority of the world, $250 US is indeed luxury.

I agree with Rob and Jay.

Hell, even in the US, $250 can be pricey to some income brackets. For me, the price of the 3DS is also the price of a car payment. Also keep in mind that the economy is still in the crapper, and there are still massive numbers of unemployed people out there, some of whom are gamers. I don't even own a Xbox 360 yet, and that's a higher priority to me then a 3DS.

LV sunglasses are not $1200. More like $250. Oops.

This post didn't get me mad or anything, but it did kinda rub me the wrong way. I even sorta made an account just to comment on how uncomfortable I felt after reading this post.

I mean don't get me wrong, I've been reading bitmob since it was sorethumbs and I don't now hate on Mike. But, this is pretty classist and is another example on how closed gaming press/journalism/blogging can be towards the rest of the world.

I mean it can sound a bit harsh and I get what Mike is getting at. But regular people aren't buying Rolexes every 4-5 years. But they're buying/upgrading videogame machines if they can, and when they do it's part of a "luxury item" I mean I've boughten systems for 250$ (my wii) and with games and extra controller it adds pretty close to an 800$ rolex.

Still love ya mike, just be careful with certain statements, even when I assume a bit lighthearted

Hey Lionel, thanks for the comment, and thanks for making an account :)

One thing I don't understand is how my experiences as a member of the gaming press has closed me off from the rest of the world. No one will be sending me a free 3DS. I'll have to buy it, same as anyone, and as I don't get any money from writing here (not that I'm complaining, writing here has been a great privilege), I'll have to pay for it from the money I make at my (let me assure you) very low wage job.

Guys, I don't think I can be "classist" when I'm in the same class as you. Just because comic Mike is wearing fancy sunglasses and a Rolex (while drinking scotch) doesn't mean I have any of those things.

I'm not going to back off of my original point that I think people are overreacting to the 3DS' price by calling it a luxury item, but I didn't mean to insult anyone. I think you guys take me a little too seriously sometimes :)

It's just a reaction. We pretty much all have a DS or two—different models, yeah, but we have them nonetheless. Now I can either save that $250 for rent or a new PC or sex or this or that or blow it on something I kinda already have and certainly don't need. Feels like a luxury item, that's our perspective.

Aren't all videogame consoles and accessories luxury items?

The constant bitching about prices in game consumers is ridiculous, I agree with that much.

You most certainly can. That statement is little different from "my best friend is black!" in the face of a racist joke. (I'm not saying you're racist, Mike! Just be aware that whether joking or not, your comparison holds meaning outside of your intended interpretation.)

I'm sorry guys, but I don't think I did anything out of line. Of course you have the right to be offended (which, as Ricky Gervais once said, doesn't make you right), but I can't promise to tone myself down.
