Bitmob Challenge: Mike Tyson Day

I've detailed my relationship with Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! in videos, on podcasts, and in blog posts. Here's the quick version as to why (or you can watch this video I made while at GameSpot): One night, when I was a kid, I made the decision that I wouldn't go to bed until I had beaten Mike Tyson. I spent hours and hours battling Iron Mike, and while I improved ever so slightly with each fight, they all ended with me on the canvas. Finally, at about 5am, I won a decision over Tyson and watched the end credits roll. It was -- and still is -- the most memorable gaming-related moment of my life.

After I won the bout, I remember thinking "Wow, that was really hard. I wonder how old I'll be when I can't do it any more?" It was then that I decided to try and beat Mike Tyson once a year for the rest of my life. I told myself that when I couldn't do it anymore I'd know that it was time to quit playing games.

That is how "Mike Tyson Day" came to be.

This year, I'd like to share my tradition with everyone at Bitmob. I invite all of you to play Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! this week, and then share your experience with the community either by commenting on this story, writing an article, shooting a video, or sending an email to [email protected]. I'll put all of your stories together into one article and post it Friday at 2pm PST (so, if you could get them to me before then, that would be fantastic).

You don't have to beat him, you just need to try. No, Mr. Dream doesn't count. I can't wait to hear tales of your battles.

Good luck, and happy Mike Tyson Day!*

*Yes, I am well aware of Tyson's criminal past. I'm not celebrating the man, I'm celebrating the game and my life-long hobby.

Ugh, I already know how this is going to end for me. My first post on Bitmob was regarding Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. It's about time I give it another go, I guess. Shame these need to be in by Friday. I imagine the losses would go easier were I drinking but I don't drink on weekdays. Although maybe I should make an exception.

Matt: I knew that code before I knew my social security number. I can still put it in with my eyes closed. :)

Michael: You can drink away your sorrow on the weekend, but you should be in top fighting condition when you take on Mike during the week -- not drinking could be your key to victory.

I have beat Tyson a few times in my life, but not in quite a while.  I am going to get it setup at my office and hopefully get some video of the failures uploaded.  That game taught me the meaning of frustration as a kid.  That honestly was the first game that made me rage out.  I remember snapping the door off the NES because I wanted to get to the game so bad to through it across the room.

You're probably gonna hate me for this, but I'm pretty sure the furthest I ever got in Punch-Out was beating Glass Joe. Why? Because I was born the year it came out, and didn't get to try the game until fifteen years later. To this day, I think I've only played the game for 10-15 minutes (total).

Dang. If I had my Nintendo with me (it's with the parents), I would totally partake. This sounds like brutal fun.

This will be difficult for most others to participate in. You can't exactly find the Mike Tyson version of Punch Out!! easily anymore.

I don't have a copy of Punch Out, but to in order to observe the holiday I'll just fight Street Fighter's Balrog instead. He's close enough right?

I've been meaning to set up my laptop webcam facing the TV and livestream my attempt all week. Maybe I'll still do it this weekend.

Matt: Post a quick blurb about your efforts. If you can post them in the next 45 minutes I can add them to my story.

wow I just beat him after trying for hours...... got two stars and caught him on the eye blink twice.  The second time at 2:58 in the round.  I am going to try it again and see if I can get some fraps action going.

I have had everyone in my office try, most people are TKOd in under 30 seconds only me and another person have made it into the second round.  There have been multiple controller tosses and fits of rage by everyone, my co-workers have swore off the game for life.  Having beat him one time today with all my friend/co-workers watching was an amazing feeling.  I guess I will give up for now, there is always next year I guess.
