Bitmob Wants You: To Play Sleep Is Death

We have a very different callout for you...we actually don't want you to write anything. We want you to show us your game design skills.

How? We want you and a friend to play Sleep Is Death, the ludicrously ambitious game by Jason Rohrer.

What is Sleep Is Death? It's a very unique two-player gaming experience. One player plays the game, and the other, the controller, determines what the game actually is! For a thorough explanation check out this in-game story.

Fortunately, for our cash-strapped community members, Sleep Is Death is now "pay what you can afford," with a minimum cost of $1.75. Each purchase gets you two copies of the game. If you can afford 87.5 cents, you can join in this challenge. (Although you can always pay more than that to support the game creator!) It's available for Macs and PCs.

We're going to ask the players (not the controllers) to record their experiences, upload to a video site, and embed in a Bitmob article. You can use any screen-recording software. For a free application try Camstudio. For our less tech-savvy community members, using the Print Screen function to capture screen shots will be just as good.

Official guidelines forthwith:

1. Pair up with another person and play Sleep Is Death (purchase it at the official site).
2. Establish who will be the "player" and have them record their experience.
Try to keep it under 10 minutes, or a couple dozen screen shots. It can be an actual game with goals, a sketch, or anything else the two participants want to create.
3. Upload your video to a site like YouTube and embed in a Bitmob article. Tag the article with Sleep Is Death. Be sure to tell us who was the player and who was the controller.
4. Publish your article by June 2, 2010.

If you don't have a partner, post in the comments so you can find one. And don't be afraid to reverse roles. The more stories each pair of players can create, the better!

And to help you start, here is a short series of videos created by Jason Rohrer that will help controllers get started making games for their players:
