A couple of months ago, I found myself yearning for a new RPG experience. I have a very large backlog concentrated on this genre, so I turned to the community to select my next game. In return, I promised to write about my gaming experience here on Bitmob so that all of you could read the results of your choice. I stand before you here today to apologize, for I have not only lied to you, but failed you as well -- twice.

When I came to you with four choices (Blue Dragon, Final Fantasy X-2, Tales of Destiny, Valkyrie Profile), I had little doubt which one would be the most popular. Valkyrie Profile won by a large margin among those of you who left comments, but selecting a winner was never my intent. On the contrary, what I wanted to see was which game garnered the most hate and resentment, then proceed to play that one. This decision was also an easy one for the commenters, as Final Fantasy X-2 was the hot pants-filled butt of all the jokes.

I played approximately five hours of FFX-2 and that is where my trek with that title ended. While I could look past the Charlie's Angels cheesiness and the we-obviously-know-who-we-are-trying-to-appeal-to dress sphere transformations, the core game experience was just not enough to hold my attention. The "platforming" elements added to the game are atrocious, the new battle system is clunky, and the mission-based structure is just a mess. Add to this that there was no story in sight beyond "we are doing this for fun" after five hours and I was fed up. This is my first failure.

After this, I came to my senses and decided it was time to get serious. My copy of Valkyrie Profile had been collecting dust long enough, so it was time to give this classic a try. My ambitions were quickly dowsed however, as the game failed to load. Upon inspecting the back of the disc, I discovered a large quantity of scratches that I failed to spot upon receiving the game. After 10 minutes of painstakingly cleaning the game, it finally booted. Each time I tried to play it after that, however, proved more of a chore than the last time. The game is now sitting back on my shelf where it probably shall remain. The little I did get to play was very enjoyable and featured a combo-based battle system unlike anything I've seen. Failure number two.

Now, with Final Fantasy XIII looming right around the corner, starting up a new RPG just seems futile. So instead of diving into one of those, I bring all of you something that shames me even more than my last gaming choice. This time, I grab the 4 games on the top of my pile of shame and ask of you: Please, help me redeem some of my gamer cred by choosing one of these titles.

Shadow of the Colossus - I haven't touched this game in years and I know exactly why. This may be the only time you hear me complain about this, but the frame rate in game really got to me. I felt as if I was watching a slide show at times rather than actually playing a game. I eventually got too frustrated and put the game down, even though I know I really should push through.

Psychonauts - I don't have an excuse for why I never finished this one. If I remember correctly, I got about 4 hours in and then for some reason just, stopped. I remember enjoying what I had played, but have just never gotten around to going back to it. I watched an old roommate play through a lot more than I had gotten through, so I have a good idea what direction the game takes, but there's just so many games.

Okami - I've owned this game for over two years and have never touched it. It's also probably the longest game out of the 4 on the top of my pile of shame. This might be part of the reason why I have left it aside, even amongst praise from nearly everyone I've talked to. I know very little able the gameplay outside of the reviews and second-hand talk I've heard, an I'm still interested.

Beyond Good & Evil - This is the newest game on my pile of shame, but only because I just recently purchased it and don't consider games I don't own to be on the pile. BG&E is also the game I know the least about of the 4 I am considering. And when I say nothing, I mean I see what is on the box, and nothing else. I've heard possibly more than any other game of last generation that this was wildly passed over, so I'm ready to give it a go.

So there you have it Bitmobbers, your choices for the next game that I play. The only thing that I ask is this time you select only one choice and make it a solid one. This time, I swear that I will play through the game the whole way and write about my adventures with finally being able to clear one of these undoubtedly great tiles off of my pile of shame forever.

If you have a lot of time (i.e. 30+ hours) then I'd recommend Okami. If not, go with Beyond Good & Evil, but you can't really go wrong with any of these choices.

Ha, these are pretty much the token four games in everyone's backlog; the niche titles that are well-received and noted as "must plays" amongst gaming enthusiasts, but always sit on the shelf and take second place to games you actually want to play... In any case, I've managed to play through SotC, Okami, and Psychonauts over the last year, and all are very enjoyable titles.

For all your raving about Ico on numerous episodes of Pixel Revolt, I can't believe you haven't played SotC.  The game is spectacular, and the connections to Ico are quite interesting. It's also pretty straightforward and relatively short, so you can be almost certain you'll see it to the end.

I would put my vote towards SotC, but if you went with BG&E, I'd probably play along with you, as I've had my eye on that one for a while now.

Beyond Good & Evil.

I've played each of those games to some capacity; but BG & E was the one I finished.  It has a solid pace and plot thread that held me for the long run.  Being someone who used to have an atrocious backlog myself, you can also put this one to bed in a reasonable amount of time; although somewhat short, it's also very satisfying.

Out of those four games, I've only played two of them to completion, and those are Shadow of the Colossus and Beyond Good and Evil. Of those two, I vote for Shadow of the Colossus by a small margin.

I, too, have owned Okami for quite some time and have never played it. I keep saying one day I will get around to it.

I have played every one of those games and they are all amazing. If you don't want a long RPG, then Okami shouldn't be on that list. I logged 60 hours in that game when I got to the end. Amazing game, but I'd say go with Shadow of the Colossus instead and save Okami for when you have more time and aren't anticipating a time eater like FF13.

Go with Shadow of the Colossus. If anything, you can beat it inside a month if you tackle just one colossus a day.

Beyond Good and Evil, definitely.

Shadow of the Colossus. It's one of very few games that's made me want to take it all in, and the adrenaline you get when you're hanging onto a wing-tip just inches above the water is very real. I only wish it was longer.

That is an impressive group of four games but I cannot go past Shadow of the Colossus, the narrative development and the variety of battles make it a great title and worthy of all its praise. As for the other three I would put BG&E second only because it is on my list of shame as well. Both Psychonauts and Okami were games that I played and enjoyed but could never work through to completion, both are special in their own ways but I found their mechanics started to grate on me after a few hours.

Good luck with your choice!

I say Beyond Good and Evil or Okami should be choosen

Each of the four has their own superlative that can be applied to it.

SotC is easily the shortest - I beat it in a rental period (just make sure that you don't hold yourself back from checking an FAQ to get past some of the nonsensical puzzle mechanics).

On the other hand, Okami is definitely the longest, providing plenty of areas to explore, collectibles to find, etc.  The story is the weakest of the four, but the backgrounds & setting make up for it.  The battle system gets a little repetitive by the end, but is fun for the most part.

BG&E is the tightest experience from beginning to end.  Stealth & action sequences trade off seamlessly, and the role of an investigative reporter that actually does investigative reporting is one of the most unique in gaming (eat your heart out, Frank West).  The ending is kind of dumb, though.

My final recommendation, though, is for you to play Psychonauts first.  The gameplay is nothing to write home about, but the writing, level design, and overall concept are so damned brilliant that depriving yourself of that experience would be a shame.

Eventually, you should finish all four, though.

They are all great, but Shadow had me speechless the whole time. It pushed the PS2 to the limit and it shows. It was one of the first times since Super Metroid or SOTN where exploring a game world felt new again.
