A couple of months ago, I found myself yearning for a new RPG experience. I have a very large backlog concentrated on this genre, so I turned to the community to select my next game. In return, I promised to write about my gaming experience here on Bitmob so that all of you could read the results of your choice. I stand before you here today to apologize, for I have not only lied to you, but failed you as well -- twice.
When I came to you with four choices (Blue Dragon, Final Fantasy X-2, Tales of Destiny, Valkyrie Profile), I had little doubt which one would be the most popular. Valkyrie Profile won by a large margin among those of you who left comments, but selecting a winner was never my intent. On the contrary, what I wanted to see was which game garnered the most hate and resentment, then proceed to play that one. This decision was also an easy one for the commenters, as Final Fantasy X-2 was the hot pants-filled butt of all the jokes.
I played approximately five hours of FFX-2 and that is where my trek with that title ended. While I could look past the Charlie's Angels cheesiness and the we-obviously-know-who-we-are-trying-to-appeal-to dress sphere transformations, the core game experience was just not enough to hold my attention. The "platforming" elements added to the game are atrocious, the new battle system is clunky, and the mission-based structure is just a mess. Add to this that there was no story in sight beyond "we are doing this for fun" after five hours and I was fed up. This is my first failure.
After this, I came to my senses and decided it was time to get serious. My copy of Valkyrie Profile had been collecting dust long enough, so it was time to give this classic a try. My ambitions were quickly dowsed however, as the game failed to load. Upon inspecting the back of the disc, I discovered a large quantity of scratches that I failed to spot upon receiving the game. After 10 minutes of painstakingly cleaning the game, it finally booted. Each time I tried to play it after that, however, proved more of a chore than the last time. The game is now sitting back on my shelf where it probably shall remain. The little I did get to play was very enjoyable and featured a combo-based battle system unlike anything I've seen. Failure number two.
Now, with Final Fantasy XIII looming right around the corner, starting up a new RPG just seems futile. So instead of diving into one of those, I bring all of you something that shames me even more than my last gaming choice. This time, I grab the 4 games on the top of my pile of shame and ask of you: Please, help me redeem some of my gamer cred by choosing one of these titles.
Shadow of the Colossus - I haven't touched this game in years and I know exactly why. This may be the only time you hear me complain about this, but the frame rate in game really got to me. I felt as if I was watching a slide show at times rather than actually playing a game. I eventually got too frustrated and put the game down, even though I know I really should push through.
Psychonauts - I don't have an excuse for why I never finished this one. If I remember correctly, I got about 4 hours in and then for some reason just, stopped. I remember enjoying what I had played, but have just never gotten around to going back to it. I watched an old roommate play through a lot more than I had gotten through, so I have a good idea what direction the game takes, but there's just so many games.
Okami - I've owned this game for over two years and have never touched it. It's also probably the longest game out of the 4 on the top of my pile of shame. This might be part of the reason why I have left it aside, even amongst praise from nearly everyone I've talked to. I know very little able the gameplay outside of the reviews and second-hand talk I've heard, an I'm still interested.
Beyond Good & Evil - This is the newest game on my pile of shame, but only because I just recently purchased it and don't consider games I don't own to be on the pile. BG&E is also the game I know the least about of the 4 I am considering. And when I say nothing, I mean I see what is on the box, and nothing else. I've heard possibly more than any other game of last generation that this was wildly passed over, so I'm ready to give it a go.
So there you have it Bitmobbers, your choices for the next game that I play. The only thing that I ask is this time you select only one choice and make it a solid one. This time, I swear that I will play through the game the whole way and write about my adventures with finally being able to clear one of these undoubtedly great tiles off of my pile of shame forever.
