I love DeathSpank. I think it's a fantastic game. And I'm a guy that hates Diablo and generally dislikes all things Blizzard. But DeathSpank isn't diablo, right? Or is it?

DeathSpank does a lot right. Great graphics, solid controls, excellent story, generally excellent dialogue, fun and interesting quests, and a wonderful sense of humor. And it of course has lots of loot. It also has a streamlined user interface, with inventory management that isn't overly onerous.

Last but not least, it's an action RPG, so its combat is action based. So while an attack or block is backed by statistics, you as the player have to have good reflexes and solid combat strategies to succeed. And this is where the game falls apart for me.

Now it didn't fall apart at the start. It actually didn't even begin to fall apart until I got well into the game, several hours in fact, and I faced a dungeon boss I just couldn't beat. And since out houses, the game's save and teleport stations, all appear to be out of order while in dungeons, I couldn't easily get out, grind a few levels, and return later.

The game doesn't make that sort of solution easy, so I repeatedly fought the boss, using every healing item in my inventory and trying over and over again to figure it out. I checked online, looked at strategies from other players, and that's when it became clear to me that I don't have what it takes to beat this boss.

So I hightailed it out of the dungeon, dying repeatedly as I made my way through the lesser enemies. And finally, after spending at least two or three hours, first trying to beat the boss then trying to get out, I was out, able to wander the world and complete other quests. Whew!

But I wonder how long it will be before I face another unbeatable boss? How long will it be before my lack of gamepad skills will keep me from making progress? And while I can beat most shooters and other action games, and can beat RPGs on the harder difficulty levels, this particular action RPG is just kicking my ass.

Which begs the question: Does combat ultimately ruin DeathSpank? And if so, why did HotHead create a game with such awesome adventure elements and then force players to be great at twitch gaming?

Are you referring to the Nanny Demon in the Demon Mines?  I can assure you that he's the hardest boss in the game.  That fight was just annoying, but there are no others quite that difficult.

Overall, I thought the combat was competent, though not great.  I'd say I used my crossbow about 80% of the time, to be honest.  CQC seemed a little button-mashy and difficult to manage without getting your ass kicked (not sure I'd call it "twitch gaming" though).  It probably didn't help that I rarely used the shield... I definitely wouldn't say combat ruined DeathSpank.  It has too much else going for it.

Bryan, YES, the Nanny Demon is who I am talking about!

I almost never use the shield, and as you mentioned, I use the crossbow as much as possible. I love the game and it's good to know I won't encounter a boss as tough as that one again. I was not able to beat him at level 12 or 13. What level should I be at? And please don't tell me to just circle him and block. I tried that!

To anyone else reading these comments, I apologize.   I probably should have prefaced with a spoiler alert.  Spoiler alert!

Gary, I was level 12 when I beat him, so I know you can do it.  Just get right in there and hack the crap out of him, using potions as needed.  Don't get cute with your bow running around, or trying to eat food.  If you have any fire resistance potions or armor, use them.  Do you have a poison weapon of any kind (like the Posion Club, or Poison Club the Second)?  Poison seems to be more effective against him than anything else.  Good luck, my friend!

Thanks Bryan. I'll give it another shot.

SPOILER ALERT!

Bryan, last night I kind of ran out of things to do in DeathSpank so I girded my loins and reluctanly returned to face the Nanny. DeathSpank had gained several levels and I had weapons and potions to help out, so I fought my way to the boss, equipped a poisonous weapon in one slot, an ice weapon in another, then took a fire resist potion, a speed potion, and a critical hit potion, and killed him in less than five seconds.

Anyway, thanks for the help. I appreciate it.
