Favoritism towards Rare

It appears due to me hitting the X button in the top right corner I lost the original article I was going to write. So now I will mix it up and try a different approach to why I play favoritism. Oh and I will also try and keep you interested like the Donut story.

Now Favoritism is a strong word, but in this case it may be the right word. Over time Rare has proved them selves to go outside the box that they are comfortable in. Name another strong developer who has made more then three different genre games that all sold really well. Because Rare has done this and if you don't believe me here are at least three.

Genre Game
Fighting Killer Instinct
Shooter Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Perfect Dark Zero, Conkers Bad fur day, Conker Live & Reloaded
Brawler Battletoads
Adventure Donkey Kong Country, DKC2, DKC3, DKC 64, Star Fox Adventures, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Banjo & Kazooie, Banjo & Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Kameo
Other Viva Pinata, Viva Pinata: Trouble In Paradise, Blast Corps

No matter who the publisher is you can't say that any other developer goes more outside there comfort zone then Rare. In my eyes it takes skill to go out side your comfort zone to make great games. This is one of the major reasons why I play favoritism to Rare.

As being a gamer and loyal to a developer that also means taking the good with the bad. I may not like every game they have developed. Will admit that not everything has been good for me, but most of the time they make the gem in the rough. Realizing you want them to draw away from the cartoony look.

As a fan of Rare I would say leave it be as they make great games and if you focused more on gameplay then looks you would realize that as well.

Then again there are little things that have happend over the years to help my favoritism grow. One would be the GamePro contest when I was in middle school as I came in 2nd place and won DKC3 for SNES. The slow motion SNES controller during Orchids finishing move if done correctly is really revealing.

Then there is something I like to call "A Tough Cookie" moment that only one other person will get. All these moments and a few more will always remind me why I play favoritism towards Rare. They may make games that look like cartoons, but those games are just as hard as any other game out there.

So now you know why I am a fan of Rare through good games & bad games. Bah Bah Bah

A couple things I feel compelled to correct, so sorry if I sound like a bit of an ass: There's another "i" in favoritism, and Rare develops games, they don't publish them.

Otherwise, yes, I agree with you Toby (Did I really just say that? :D ). Rare was an incredibly varied, innovative, and downright talented developer during the days of the N64. While I've been rather overall disappointed with their material since Microsoft snatched them, I would still greatly anticipate anything that Rare is working on.

@Bryan where did I put they published games? Lost on where I wrote that so I can correct and thank you as I am a bad speller.

@Bryan I found it thank you ;D

I echo the sentiments of Bryan - Rare was a tremendous company back in the days of N64 and before but their Microsoft era has been lackluster at best. I've been meaning to get Viva Pinata - looks like my kind of game, but they otherwise really haven't been putting out the absolute blockbuster hits that Microsoft clearly expected from them given their prior reputation.

On the other hand, they're re-making Perfect Dark on the XBLA which is something I've wanted since..well, XBLA existed. So they get a win in my book. :)

Conker's Bad Fur Day and the remake for Xbox were probably the one game that made me laugh out loud the most of any game. Kameo was also my favorite launch title, actually I'm wishing I hadn't traded it in, I want to play it again.

@Garret Honestly I think some of there work for MS has been really good. They have just been over looked this generation due to launch windows of New IP's.

@David I do agree with you as I want to pick up kameo again as well.

I've always been on the edge regarding Viva Pinata. While a game developed by Rare is usually reason enough for me to check it out, I'm really not big into sandbox games (from what I infer, the game sounds like something akin to Animal Crossing).

Kameo was indeed solid. I feel like that game didn't garner nearly the praise and hubbub that it should have. On the topic of 360 launch titles, I was overwhelmingly anticipating Perfect Dark Zero, until the lackluster reviews from critics and gamers alike convinced me to quell my undying urge to play a (shitty) Perfect Dark sequel and opt for CoD2 instead (glad I made that choice). Though as Garret stated, the announcement of Perfect Dark's re-release on the XBLA makes me a happy lad.

To dive further into what Garret also stated, what is up with Rare? Why have they been so quiet and unproductive since joining with Microsoft? In their N64 days, Rare was pumping out one or two AAA titles a year. Since Nuts 'n' Bolts released last fall, there hasn't even been an inkling towards Rare's future plans. What gives?

@Bryan if you use your 260 you see rare's work every day. Who else do you think made those avatars & clothes? Rare is the team behind that. As for VP start out VP: TIP as it is better and way more involving even though you are confined in a certain area. It plays way more into a strategy genre. I also did a review of the game early on here if you want to read it.

With Peter M over seeing we will really see what Rare can do or even tap into that has been un touched.

Well, yeah, the Avatar system is all well and good, but was it really that big of a project? And what are they doing with it now, aside from occasionally creating new clothing and accessories? Rare is a big company. Surely there aren't 100-200 employees maintaining the Avatars. They have to have some hidden gem of a game up their sleeve (How about a proper Conker sequel?)...

@Bryan I believe there is a lot going on behind closed doors in making there next games. With the production cycle they put and the tighted lipped as they are I would expect a new game some time end of next year / early 2011 that is not a re hash for XBLA.

No, you're wrong.

....nah, you're right. Rare is a fantastic, talented developer. I wonder what they're working on next.

I am really LTTP on this one, but I agree with Toby: very few developers have the versatility that Rare has. Viva Pinata had me hooked for weeks! But! Sadly Rare games have gone from being AAA titles to be more art or unique titles. I still love what they are doing, but I would like to see them put out a big AAA game. Like a full-on Battletoads remake in 3D with 4 player co-op.

And Toby, don't kill me, but I HATED Killer Instinct!!!

@Lance you didn't play as orchid with a turbo controller that had slow motion doing her finishing move then.

@Toby - No I did not, I only played it in the arcade. What do you think of a 3D Battletoads with 4-player Co-op?

@Lance if they did that it would for ever change the way people see battletoads. Just like the turtles will ever be changed in my mind.

A whole new AAA title needs to be made.

Lance, after playing the recently released Turtles in Time on the XBLA, I am now against any classic 8/16-bit beat 'em up re-releasing. The new Turtles really doesn't hold up that well, adds nothing, and the changes are more or less for the worse (in my opinion). Plus, you know that they'd find ways to dumb down the absurd difficulty that was the NES Battletoads. That game is a legend that should remain untouched. I think Rare can do better than continuously re-releasing old classics into the Arcade.

@Bryan @Toby

I have to respectfully disagree with both of you. Imagine a game like God of War but with 4 player co-op and special moves that require two or more people to work together!

I am not talking about a 2D re-release, I am talking about a 3D version!

Now proceed to rip my idea to shreds ;)

@Lance What your asking will take time. Think about it Castlevania is just getting to that point. Now you want to have four people to be able to do this. That takes serious talent and more time. So for right now I will down that idea just saying for now.

I agree with Brayn as it should stay right where it is at or it will be ruined as a game.

@Toby - I know, I know, but I would settle for a 2-player co-op game akin to Ninja Gaiden.... That would not take TOO much time.
