Community prompt: Share your nerdiest holiday memories

Friday, December 17, 2010
EDITOR'S NOTEfrom James DeRosa

When I was five, Santa Claus brought me a shiny, new NES Action Set with a copy of Super Mario Bros. 2. I don't think I've gotten a better present since.

When I was a child, the best Christmas gifts I ever received were a copy of the Star Wars Trilogy boxed set and a Nintendo 64. Nothing will ever top those two gifts as my all-time favorites (unless I get that R2D2 Droid 2 phone I've been asking for -- fingers crossed!). I have some pretty nerdy Christmas memories, too. I remember watching The Empire Strikes Back in my footed pajamas and spending hours playing Super Mario 64 with my father afterward. (His turns always seemed to last so much longer than mine.)

Video games top the wishlists of nearly everyone I know. Thanks to the Wii, that even includes my older relatives (though, I have to admit that waving a controller around like an idiot really does bring the family together). Last Christmas, the seven of us played Wii Sports for hours. And you wanna know what the best part was? The only people in attendance under 48 years of age were my brother and me.

Anyway, I was hoping the community might share some stories, too. Add them to the comments, or better yet, write a post of your own! Here are a few questions to get you started:

  • What are some of your favorite holiday memories?
  • What is the best holiday gift you've ever recieved?
  • What is on your wishlist this year?
  • What is the nerdiest give you've ever given?
  • Are you giving any nerdy gifts this year?

The nerdiest gifts I ever gave are definitely my custom-made Street Fighter Mighty Muggs.  I've been having trouble deciding what I want for Christmas this year though.

I remember getting the NES vividly.  I must have been 5 years old.   I remember un-boxing it, and holding a Zapper for the first time, a grey one.  I contemplated shooting my Dad in the back, but on the off chance that thing was deadly, I pointed it at the couch and pulled the trigger.  *TWANG*

I was relieved that thing wasn't a real handgun. For months, I only thought the Nintendo was for Duck Hunt.  Then I played Super Mario Bros. which was included on the same cart and nothing was ever the same.

I freaked out when I received my GBC with Pokemon Gold. I remember thinking I had to restart even time I booted the game up, so I would try to keep it on as long as possible. Then my cousin showed me how to save. I was blown away. Nowadays I throw a fit if the game doesn't tell me when it autosaves.

Mine's not gaming related...I did get a really awesome, expensive electronic dart board for Christmas, once. I still have it...it's bar quality!
