Official Sega Genesis Emulator for iPhone

You read that correctly. Sega recently announced their mobile Genesis Ultimate Collection, and it feels like a Sonic-themed download service [Gizmodo via Technabob]:

Games will cost you between three and five dollars, and Sega plans to roll out more classic titles than the few already available through the App Store. Does anyone really want to play Genesis games on their iPhone? Touch controls might be okay for Shining Force, but I can see things going horribly wrong when you throw in Decap Attack or any of the brawling games available. Of course, the limitation of tilt and touch controls don't seem to phase the homebrew developers building Nintendo 64 emulators for the device.

Look for the Genesis Ultimate Collection app in February. Gamers who pick this up will be rewarded with their very own digital copy of Space Harrier

I agree. Touch controls for directional movement on the iPhone are horrid. I can't even tolerate them on RPGs.

Wouldn't a portable Genesis controller that you could plug into the iPhone be totally rad/impractical?

Yes, Alejandro, it would. I've been wishing for an iPhone add-on controller for some time now.

I could see myself playing the Phantasy Star games or any other classic Genesis RPGs but I don't know about anything else.

Sega managed to get Streets of Rage work well with a D-pad, but I'm not sure if that was Sega's doing or that games slower game play.

I can't even play Pacman CE on my touch due to the controls. A touch d-pad just doesn't cut it for me. I have to actually feel something move under my thumb.
