Saving the enviroment or just saving money?

Nintendo and Microsoft have started a trend that may not bother some people but it drives me crazy. In the disguise of being more environmentally friendly they have removed plastic in the cases their games come in. Whether or not this saves the planet is not something I am looking into, as an extra ounce of plastic in my Mario Galaxy 2 case is not likely to make a difference when BP is spilling probably 500 times the pollution a day in the ocean than it takes to make a plastic DVD case. What drives me crazy is these companies are hiding behind this environmental conservation stance when they are just worried about saving money. Less plastic in the cases means less money they need to spend to produce the case and a lower cost to distribute the games because of a lower shipping weight. If they want to get rid of plastic in the case that is fine with me but the way they are doing it is not the right way. Why remove the plastic under the area of the disc? The entire purpose of a case is to protect the disc from damage. What is the point of a case if you remove the most important part? I don’t need to protect the corners of the instruction book; I want to protect the $60 disc!

                                       Why This?                                                    And not this?

You should be able to remove plastic from the case and still keep it a case. Look at the above pictures. Fill in the area under and above the disc and then remove the plastic in the areas I colored in. I figure with the engineers working at these companies they could have thought of the same solution above as I did and still keep the structural integrity of the case. If I am completely wrong and a case like the one I suggest wouldn’t work someone please let me know. The bad thing about this is Nintendo and Microsoft are not the only ones doing this also; a lot of Blu-Ray discs I have recently purchased are the same way. I just purchased the awesome Book of Eli on Blu-Ray yesterday and sure enough it’s the same type of case. I just hope Sony doesn’t go this route with their games. But they probably will. It is just another way the companies who make these products can cut their costs and maybe even sucker in some extra purchases when someone pokes something through the thin layer of paper protecting their discs.

This is the biggest bunch of BS I have heard in a while! Yes, making the game cases with less plastic does cause less pollution and the like. But I don't think many game cases are finding their way to landfills. I think most game cases are sitting on people's shelfs protecting the contents they hold.

I think Nintendo's DS cases are the only ones that could be much smaller and thinner and still protect the game.

This is just a dishonest way for corporations to say they are helping the environment when really all they are doing is saving some cash.

Good post, and thanks for bringing this to my attention, Matt!
