Why I Think Multi Touch Games are Going to be my Joysticks.
Thursday, September 09, 2010

I find myself at a point where I'm realizing that I might not be able to play multi touch games, that my hours of frustration are not going to pay off,  and that I'm always going to be terrible at this games that require me to multitask with my thumbs. Thinking how frustrating this is for me brought back memories of my dad trying to play hit man for the PS2, that required for him to use both the joysticks, I still remember how much he struggled to move and at the same time align the camera of the player, how after an hour or so he would give up and tell me that it was impossible for him to play these new games, and now I find myself having the same problem specially with FPS games on the Iphone I can't move and at the same time align the camera and god forbid have to shoot an enemy.

My Worst Nightmare

I'm not saying that I can't play every game on the Iphone, I enjoy playing simple single touch games like Canabalt, Tetris, and Doodle Jump other than that I'm a lost cause. I have tried playing games like Call of Duty World at War Zombie, N.O.V.A, and a multitude of more games and always the same result failure.  This worries me because as we all know Iphone gaming is definitely something that is growing exponentially each day. It's incredible how many people I see playing with their I phones or IPods touch. More incredible to me was when I asked my little cousin if he preferred playing with his Nintendo DS or PSP he looked at me appalled and replied iPod touch.

I Approve This

Knowing that my little cousin prefers playing with his iPod touch worries me and assures me that In the future handheld gaming will only be multi touch, so this leaves me with the horrible realization that maybe in the future I'll be like my dad when it comes to new ways of playing games , that my son or daughter will watch my frustrating attempt to beat the first level of a game with the easiest difficulty  on and I still will lose.

I don't have an iPhone, but I've played with other people's. I also find them a bit hard to control unless they only feature a single button.

I have an iPhone and have N.O.V.A and Archetype. I like the idea of having a FPS game with me all the time but I do find myself getting annoyed with the controls after a while. I found it cumbersome to move and look around and shoot when my thumbs are covering up the screen.

I definitely use my iPhone more for games like Cannabalt. Though I think dual-stick shooters like Geometry Wars an Meteor Blitz is fun on the iPhone. It's great for bullet hell games like Dodonpachi Resurrection and Espgaluda II though.
