Battlefield 3 and the working world lifestyle: I'm losing my edge

Sleep-deprived slave of the working world

I hate to say it, but I’m feeling too old for gaming.

It's not as if I don't enjoy games. I still love playing many of the newer classics, such as Resident Evil 4 and Bioshock.

However, I'm getting too busy to sit down and struggle through a frustrating boss fight. Whenever I think about the time I'd have to invest in every single enemy encounter, I casually switch to playing Battlefield 3.

Why Battlefield 3? I choose it because I don't have to think so hard about all the acrobatic tactics I'd have to pull off in Devil May Cry. I don't have to worry about the intense combos I'd have to execute in a fighting game. My soldier only has to move around the map and shoot at enemies.

Even though it looks hardcore, it's just a simple matter of hunting through the landscape of mountains and subways. Every battle almost always has the same simplistic tactics. Sure, I can upgrade my soldier with goofy flashlights and robot companions. However, every battle has the same simple, laid-back strategy.

I've really tried to play a different game over the last few days. However, I had three different projects I had to finish last weekend. I needed to finish writing the minutes for a church group meeting. I needed to finish a tough project for one of my college classes. I needed to write articles for my freelance job.

Strangely enough, Battlefield 3 is the only game that allows me to casually settle down. I'm not willing to risk scaring myself with a survival horror game. I can't engage in a long RPG session unless I have enough time to build up my characters. The only game that seemed to fit my hectic schedule at the time was my simple FPS game, Battlefield 3.

It's not as if I'll never play another epic game ever again. Yet, it feels like I'm losing touch with the old fantasy worlds that I used to love. It's as if I'm rejecting the role-playing universe for a shooter that plays more like a casual game. Worst of all, it just doesn't feel hardcore.

Perhaps I'm losing my edge after all these years. Don’t worry. I'm not ashamed to try other exciting games. I just don't feel like wrapping myself up in intense action-based adventures whenever I have tons of work to do.

Forgive me for not picking up Dark Souls for now. I have other things to do. Someday I'll regain my edge. I'm just too busy to handle it at the moment.

I'm far too competitive to casually play any multiplayer game.  I don't know about anyone else but I still love replaying the original Portal when I don't have time to commit to a new title.

Portal's a great game. I often take for granted what that game accomplished, especially with all these new releases coming out. I think it's one of the few FPS-style games that kept me laughing for the entire ending.

I could probably try playing that game if I get too worn out near the end of the year. Not a bad idea.

I felt the same way with Final Fantasy 13. Regular enemies were such a pain for me; I haven't even completed it yet. It became so tedious and hell-bent battling ordinary foes. Maybe it's just me...

Nah, that game was pretty hardcore. Some of the enemies at the very end were brutal. And then the final boss threw all these nasty attacks that stopped time just so it could wipe out almost all of a party's HP. It's definitely not just you. 13 was one of the toughest Final Fantasy games thus far.
