I'm not renewing PlayStation Plus

EDITOR'S NOTEfrom James DeRosa

PlayStation Plus has always been a hard sell. I think the problem stems from the fact that Sony never quite nailed the fundamentals (such as online shopping and voice chat). Instead, the company tried to pile freebies nobody wanted on top of a lackluster service that is only marginally better than its free-to-use counterpart.

No thanks, I'm on a diet.

I can no longer indulge in the luxury that is PlayStation Plus. I'm canceling.

It's a decision I made that was reaffirmed after reading an email from Sony last week that enthusiastically reminded me of what the service has offered me over last year: a bunch of (usually) dated content that I don't need and couldn't possibly find the time to play.

Ironically enough, that was one of the reasons I championed the service in the first place. When I initially signed up, Sony gifted me LittleBigPlanet and six other games...that I had previously purchased. I had better luck with my second month because I didn't own most of the new content, but it turns out there was a reason for that: It was all complete shit.

The subsequent monthly offerings rarely impressed. I was caught off guard only once when Stacking was made available to subscribers at no cost. Red Faction: Battlegrounds was another complimentary title, but let's face it: It's one of the worst games that's come out this year.

My Plus subscription also afforded me access to several "exclusive" betas, but few were actually worth my time. I was never able to find a match during the SOCOM 4 beta, and the Infamous 2 user-generated-content preview was an abject failure. The Uncharted 3 beta went public before I even got the chance to play it, so I wouldn't really call that exclusive.

More than anything else, though, the Killzone 3 beta was the thing that sealed the fate of my Plus account. Believe it or not, it wasn't the whole hacking debacle. Having my personal personal information compromised certainly concerned me, but by that point, I had already made my decision.

Nope, it's the Killzone 3 closed beta. For those of you who don't know -- or have understandably forgotten -- Sony gave access to the closed beta to the first 10,000 Plus subscribers who downloaded a Killzone 3 Xross Media Bar theme. Paying just under $70 a year wasn't enough to gain access to a multiplayer demo; you had to jump through another little (time-sensitive) hoop to have the honor of helping in-house developer Guerrilla Games fine-tune its multiplayer.

That just about did it for me. The much-publicized PlayStation Network outage certainly didn't help matters, but I didn't appreciate the audacity of Sony asking me to perform menial tasks in order to access what I had already paid for.

Funnily enough, I recently extended my Xbox Live subscription, even though I rarely play multiplayer games on my 360. Maybe it has something to do with that service being a necessity while PlayStation Plus is a luxury: a luxury in which I no longer wish to indulge.

I've never been interested in Plus. The only time I actually wanted it was when Stacking was made available for free, but then I remembered I could just buy Stacking for much, much cheaper.

You played the smart card there, Chris. All I have to show for my Plus subscription - now expired - is about 30gb of expired content on my hard drive.

I'll agree that all I got from my one month Welcome Back trial was a HDD full of unplayed games, with one exception; I played the crap out of the UC3 beta from the moment it went live.

I'm in a similar boat. Bought PS Plus for Stacking, thinking I'd get a whole bunch of other good games over the year, but most of them have been crap, or games I already bought from PSN anyhow.

If I canceled my subscription, I think I'd definitely miss the auto-downloads and cloud saves, but unless they bring more value to the table PS Plus is almost as worthless as Xbox LIVE is to me.

At this point they should slim up the crappy content and start giving users new and innovative services worth having, or brand new (and good) games every month. The only really good PS Plus feature is the store discounts, which aren't worth it once you factor in the subscription fee.

I didn't even try PS+ during the free welcome back month, for fear of auto-renewal (which was unfounded).  But, more to the point, I wasn't really interested in the vast majority of PS+ content... It sucks to say that, but that's the way I see it.

It's too bad that PS+ might be seen as a luxury, while Xbox LIVE is deemed a necessity for those who want multiplayer online.  It's not really a fair comparison though, if not for that reason alone.  PSN is free = free multiplayer, so PS+ is viewed my many (including myself) as not necessary.

The PSN store actually offers some pretty damned good stuff (having bought around 10 PSone classics, myself, with more planned in the future), but PS+ just seems like a total money grab, to me. The individual has no control over the free stuff or bargains. You have know way of knowing what the year will bring with PS+.

The last time I went to Blockbuster Video, the clerk asked me if I wanted to buy a book of coupons. He went so far as opening it and let me see exactly what I would be paying for and let me work out if it would be a worthwhile purchase. With PS+, you don't know what's coming.

I've never been interested in purchasing PSN+. I barely used it during the 30 day trial period and all of the content offered was mediocre or bad. The only thing that I found remotely interesting was the full game trial section, but even that amounts to basically being extended demos.

Just like the rest of you, I'd consider purchasing PSN+ if they offered good content and if they actually informed people what would be made available ahead of time. As it is now it actually might discourage PSN+ subscribers from buying content, for the fear that it might later be offered for free or for a reduced price.

Plus has been a great value really.  I like the early access to demos and betas, also the free games certainly help.  Day-1 Discounts on downloadables is a great benefit too.

I found that the "Day 1" discounts weren't substantial enough to justify the asking price. Plus: you're paying for a discount.

I guess I get to be the (nearly) lone dissenting voice on yet another subject.

About half of the content that you get for free are Minis, which aren't great, but I've used them to fill an hour here or there. I've probably gotten half of my money back on discounts for things I would have purchased anyway, and another 1/3rd in free games that I would have otherwise purchased. There's also some DLC I got for free that I probably wouldn't have purchased otherwise. I haven't touched the Betas at all aside from the PSRewards beta. Qore isn't worth the $30 it originally cost, but it's OK for a free add-in. Perhaps worth $10 or so a year. If I only looked at free stuff, it'd be nearly a wash.

Those are more minor than the other important thing.

PS+ is the only way to backup saved games that are copy protected... Add in the auto sync feature, and that alone is worth quite a bit for me in the event of a fried hard disk or messed up system.

I was really hoping that Sony would pull out the big guns to combat Microsoft's Live service. I don't own a PS3. The 360 has been my only console for 5 years, and the original Xbox before it for 2 years. I've had a LIve membership from the first day I bought my console. So why would I desire a victory for Sony?

Competition. I'm tired of not owning a Sony console. I have had no real reason to from the moment the PS3 launched for the price of two month's rent and a car payment. I had everything I needed already but hungered for more. So when the much rumore Plus service was finally unveiled, I looked on in horror. Content that EXPIRED once your account lapsed? Goodies that were secret until revealed and then largely chosen by some shadowy marketing panel? This was ridiculous. It felt like they thought up a lot of good ideas and then an accountant ran in and started raving, "We have to make a profit SOMEHOW!"

And that's the thing, they're supposed to make the profit by making consumers feel like it's something they can't give up. I can't imagine not having a Gold account even though I only use it to play Call of Duty or whatever multiplayer game came out that week. It's just the access. If my 360 weren't connected to the internet I feel like it would be half a machine. Everything Sony threw at their potential subscribers read like rubbish.

Hmm, how did I miss this article? Anywho, I love Playstation Plus. All the free games has brought back a lot of much needed nostalgia for me. And this month we get to play a bunch of Resident Evil games....free. I know the service has already paid for itself about 3 times over since I bought into it and I love every second of it. The best part about the free games is that they are great games, not bottom of the barrel crap.

Plus I like having exclusives like cloud saving. I have already uploaded my most important saves to the cloud and it has come in handy already a bunch of times for me.

Um.  They're not free if you're paying.  Right?  Or am I missing something here. . .

You're missing something.

From the start of Playstation plus a little over a year ago until June 29th, Sony offered Playstation Plus members 49 free games.

11 Playstation Classics

17 PSN Games

21 Minis

This, according to IGN's Article on this very subject, equals $349.51 of content.

There have also been over 100 discounts on games. The total amount of money saved on these discounts has been totaled at $453.87.

These two features alone are worth over $800 of free content and savings.

Playstation Plus also offers subscribers

-Automatic demo downloading

-Automatic Patch/system software update Downloading

-Cloud Saving

-Early Access for content like Demos

-Exclusive Betas

-Full Game trials (more than just demos, you get long chunks of games)

-Free Themes, Avatars, etc.

I paid $50 for a one year subscription, and they have offered me over $800 worth of content. Good stuff too, like I said, they aren't offering you junk games.

So, like I said, "Free Games".

You're paying for "free" content... therefore, not free.

Hey, that's what *I* said!

These responses are just nit-picky. If you want to be utterly detail oriented about the thing...

He received $350 worth of content for $50. That's an 85% savings. I won't talk about the discounts because most of the time people won't get all $450 worth of those.

Ok, if we are getting around the nitpicks and BS, then let's get to the real deal.

Sony is only "giving stuff away" because they have been eyeing Microsofts revenue and profits due to XBL subscriptions.  Playstation Plus is Sony's "gateway" subscription to next gen's XBL "gold" equiv.

No way Sony are going to let this slide another generation.  So the company that is currently seeming gracious/charitable/"free" is really setting us all up for a $50-60 per year PlusPlus*/Gold/Uber PSN account.  *Now with 100% more features.

How does no one else see this?

Waahhninja
September 09, 2011

I see this. Also, here's my bigger deal: You're paying for "free" stuff with the knowledge that it'll get taken from you if your subscription expires. You're essentially telling them that it's ok. If I lost all of my XBLA games the moment my Gold account reversed to Silver because I was too poor to renew at the time, I would've hucked my 360 years ago.

Default_picture
September 09, 2011

Your stuff may temporarily expire, but you get it back as soon as you resubscribe. Anything purchased on a discount does not expire. I treat it as a trial anyway for that stuff. I probably wouldn't buy most of it. All other games you purchase you still get to play. The expirations only apply to the tiny subset of games that you don't pay any additional money for over the PS+ subscription.

I do see that that they are trying for a subscription, but it's not a huge concern. I don't see Sony ever forcing you to buy a subscription to use online play with their system because that's their one big selling point on their online service. Even when I had a 360, I subscribed to XBL Silver because I'm not much of an online game player. PS+ actually gives me, the single player gamer, something worth paying for. I can backup my normally uncopiable saved games. I get to try out certain games for as long as I want (All those free games, really a trial until I stop paying for PS+.)

100media_imag0065
September 09, 2011

I gave Sony $50, and they gave me over $350 of games. That is the best deal in the industry. Free games. For me, the $50 I gave them goes towards clous saving, exclusive betas, exclusive game trials, automatic downloading etc. All things that my $50 paid for. The free games are just that, free.

And you will never "lose" those games. If you don't renew your PS Plus subscription, the games go away, but you never loose them. As soon as you renew you will get them back. I am not the type of person to play games twice anyway. As soon as I download a game I play it. So I could care less if they are still there for me to play a second time if I decide to not renew my subscription.

I delete them when I am finished anyway to make more room for more free games. I have downloaded every free game they have offered me. They offered me $350 worth of games. Minus my subscription (if you want to get Xbot Fanboy Technical) that equals $300 of free games.

If you don't want $300 of free game for your $50 subscription, then don't buy it. It is a very simple concept. Continue paying $15 or $20 for them on Xbox Live. I am perfectly happy playing them for free.

My argument was that if you've been with the PSN for a sustained period of time, you likely own some (in my case, a lot) of the games that are available to download for free. I paid $70 to see what other people were getting for not being early adopters. It's a great idea for people new to the PSN (or those that may have been a bit frugal in past), but for me it was a complete rip-off.
