After playing all that I could out of Super Smash Bros Brawl, I finally traded it for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. I was hungry to fight people online with Jun the Swan and Karas, but when the fight started, everything slowed down.
I couldn't stand it, but I had to accept the cold, hard facts. My Wii just couldn't handle the Internet.
As much as I'd like to forgive Nintendo for designing such a weak system, I just can't. Nintendo has fallen behind technologically. While my XBOX and PS3 friends are brawling and shooting at each other in the cyberspace universe, I'm stuck with the Wii's elementary Internet capabilities.
Don't get me wrong--the Wii can handle Internet sports games incredibly well. I played a fast-paced Madden NFL '09 game without any hitches.
However, every other game drags on, as if I was watching paint dry. The hardware is as illogcally designed as a Sega Saturn. Everything works, but it never works the way the player wants it to.
Nintendo had plenty of opportunities to use the Internet in their favor, but the company waited until nearly the last minute to update their Internet gameplay. Now we're just waiting for the 3DS, which is now pretty much Nintendo's last hope.
I don't feel terrible about how things turned out. Nintendo just happened to take a bad gamble with relying fancy accessories. The company's portable systems always turn out superior anyway. Maybe I was just wishing for the day when I could hack and slash moblins in the free Internet world, in some sort of Internet battle royale with Mario and Zelda against the world.
Thankfully, there are still plenty of options for me to experience internet gameplay on the PC. Steam is now the go-to place for downloading games with Internet deathmatches and whatnot. I'm glad that the program has grown to the level where I can fully satiate my Internet game appetite.
It's just a shame that my Wii has to slow down for every Tatsunoko online fight. Well, I'd better start saving some more money for another system, if I ever want to experience glorious two-on-two fighting matches in the near future.
Have you had any problems with the Wii's Internet gameplay? Feel free to write about your experience in the comments below.
