Mission eight

Our second terror site comes right at the end of the month -- February 28. The city of Lagos is pitch black, and horrid memories of that first, scrambled investigation of a Floater UFO that touched down in the thick forest haunt us at this moment. Will Floaters be our undoing, again?

This time, though, we actually have flares, and we’ve preloaded our heavy weapons with incendiary munitions. Time to light the place up!

When the exit ramp lowers, we immediately see our foe with its cold, blank eyes staring back at us.

It’s fucking Floaters, which means that the towering beasts known as Reapers will also accompany us on this mission. Hopefully we’re able to keep our distance, since they can only attack us at close range.

As the HWP moves out, the welcoming party across the way sends us a torrent of plasma fire. Good thing it can’t aim for shit, though. Once off the transport, the small tank sees a Reaper in the vicinity. Between us and the beast is nothing but open ground, so we need to move fast to take it out.

Near a small house with a white picket fence, which sits west of the drop-ship, we see another Floater. We’re surrounded! Jason drops smoke, and we prepare ourselves for the worst.

Kevin and James launch our opening salvo of laser fire -- they miss. Or did they? By sheer luck, James kills an alien previously hidden from our view!

During the hidden movement phase, the Floater with the cold stare takes a few potshots at the HWP, and then heads into the nearby convenience store for cover. The Reaper advances on our position, too. It’s just outside the Skyranger!

James makes quick work of the mass of teeth and claws -- two rounds of auto-fire see to its end.

Around the transport, our HWP spots the Floater previously camping our positing high-tailing it around the white fence. Kevin steps off the Skyranger and steadies his laser pistol -- another alien for the morgue.

Edgar walks out next and paints the adjacent building -- where a Floater previously took refuge -- with burning fire. It truly is a sight to behold.

On our next turn, we spot four aliens -- three Floaters and a Reaper -- close by. Two Floaters walk the streetlight-lit roads through town, while a Floater and Reaper pair stake out a near by park area.

Things aren't looking good for us -- read on to find out how the encounter develops!

Personal armor, heavy laser

Michael, we've already developed personal armor. Do you have another choice?

Stick with Heavy Plasma for now then Heavy Laser so we can get Laser Tanks then on to Alien Grenades. Hopefully enough of those should be recovered from missions so we won't have to build them. We have to seriously make a plan for live capture or we are going to be vulnerable to mind control in the future. We also simultaneously need to head towards an Avenger so we can have double tank action otherwise Chrysalids(sp?) are going to destroy us. I vote for more scientists in the next buying round. Good job so far Rob. I doubt I could do so well at this difficulty level.

Heavy Laser and for the second option I'll vote for Sectoid Navigator again.

Motion Scanners are useless in combat, the only thing I've used them for is mass production and selling to make some extra money, but then again I've read else where that other people use Laser Cannons for that.

I'll leave kit selection to you.  I haven't played with XcomUtil or UFO Extender yet so I don't know how to make best use of it.

Well I'm off to find my desk for the next three weeks. (I can't do math can I)

Would anyone mind if my ghost haunts the Skyranger? Instead of the sound of rattling chains, it's the sound of auto-cannon fire. :)

Not at all, Edgar! Perhaps you can snap us out of a mind-control stupor, should the worst happen....

Kenn, no one's interested in the small launcher, so looks like I'll have to equip a few soldiers with stun rods. We'll see how that turns out next week!

So I guess I'm basically Longshot from X-Men.

Heavy plasma. Stay the course.

Wouldn't Elerium make Heavy Plasma easier to research? That would be my guess.

In any case, stick to H. Plasma and I'll second the motion for Sectoid Navigator again.

Heavy laser, Floater Corpse

Alejandro, I wish tech trees in games worked like that -- it makes sense intuitively and would also make research planning more strategic.

I'll say stick with Heavy Plasma and Heavy Lasers. Lets see some laser tank action.

If need be my half brother from south of the border, Nathaniel "totally not made up" Juárez  would be more then willing to fill out the rookie ranks.

Nooo!!! Lilly, Tommy, I shall avenge thee...or something Shakespearian.  I'd love to join in and die horribly for the cause.

A small update: Memorial Day weekend is upon us, which means that I won't have another episode ready on Monday. Instead, I'll update sometime later in the week. This means that you all have extra time to vote on research options or discuss strategy.
