(Mission eight continued)

Amazingly, Jason scores a kills during the aliens’ hidden movement. He reacts to plasma shots aimed at a civilian, fires through a window with his trusty laser pistol, and takes down a Floater from a long distance away.

The HWP, though, doesn’t survive the turn.

On our turn, Jason fires four volleys of auto-fire at the alien who destroyed the HWP, and he misses with all twelve shots. After that crazy, shot-from-the-hip-though-a-window reaction fire, I’m flabbergasted. Good thing Jay clears his mind and ignites the ground underneath this Floater. But somehow, the alien still lives!

With no HWP, the alien’s have limited our scouting options. Little cover is between the Skyranger and the street. Cannon fodder to the rescue! I send Dan, one of two rookies on this mission, into the fray.

During the aliens’ turn, the Floater that just will not die shoots and kills Jason while on fire. Thomas retaliates, but his aim is off.

On our turn, though, Thomas gets the kill.

As Kevin scouts through the park, he spots a Reaper shrouded by the darkness. We’d better be careful -- they have incredible speed and can chew up our flimsy bodies with ease.

Thomas and James head up to the second floor of the now burning building next to the troop transport. We’re not worried about it collapsing -- X-Com physics allow objects to float in the air after their support structures are destroyed! They don’t see anything upstairs, but James hangs around to snipe from the window.

Shortly thereafter, an alien pops out from behind an unexplored building in the southeast corner of the map and tosses a grenade at Kevin. He survives -- just barely -- with three fatal wounds. Jay shoots his heavy cannon and paints the area with fire.

We only have five turns to get Kevin medical attention! Good thing Lilly is close by -- she moves up to be able to heal Kevin’s wounds next turn. She also spots the alien who inflicted the damage -- and his friend, too! They both still live, but at least they’re on fire.

Can Lilly get to Kevin in time, or are things about to go horribly wrong? Read on to find out!

Stick with Heavy Plasma for now then Heavy Laser so we can get Laser Tanks then on to Alien Grenades. Hopefully enough of those should be recovered from missions so we won't have to build them. We have to seriously make a plan for live capture or we are going to be vulnerable to mind control in the future. We also simultaneously need to head towards an Avenger so we can have double tank action otherwise Chrysalids(sp?) are going to destroy us. I vote for more scientists in the next buying round. Good job so far Rob. I doubt I could do so well at this difficulty level.

Heavy Laser and for the second option I'll vote for Sectoid Navigator again.



Motion Scanners are useless in combat, the only thing I've used them for is mass production and selling to make some extra money, but then again I've read else where that other people use Laser Cannons for that.



I'll leave kit selection to you.  I haven't played with XcomUtil or UFO Extender yet so I don't know how to make best use of it.



Well I'm off to find my desk for the next three weeks. (I can't do math can I)

Would anyone mind if my ghost haunts the Skyranger? Instead of the sound of rattling chains, it's the sound of auto-cannon fire. :)

Not at all, Edgar! Perhaps you can snap us out of a mind-control stupor, should the worst happen....



Kenn, no one's interested in the small launcher, so looks like I'll have to equip a few soldiers with stun rods. We'll see how that turns out next week!

Wouldn't Elerium make Heavy Plasma easier to research? That would be my guess.



In any case, stick to H. Plasma and I'll second the motion for Sectoid Navigator again.

Alejandro, I wish tech trees in games worked like that -- it makes sense intuitively and would also make research planning more strategic.

A small update: Memorial Day weekend is upon us, which means that I won't have another episode ready on Monday. Instead, I'll update sometime later in the week. This means that you all have extra time to vote on research options or discuss strategy.
