Is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 a Day One Purchase for Bitmob's Staff?

If you're wondering why your local cubicle farm seems a little emptier tomorrow than most Tuesdays, it's likely because Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, one of the most widely anticipated games of 2009, debuts at midnight. (Just 2 hours after this story posts on the East Coast).

We imagine that a number of you plan on waiting in line for the game's midnight launch -- and if you do, please let us know and how it went. Will you see any Bitmob staffers standing in line with you? Read on to find out who plans on buying the game on Day One.

Aaron: Normally, I'd have preordered the game -- or would at least have plans to buy it the day it comes out. But I'm doing the "getting married" thing at the end of this week, so there's little chance that I'd be able to play it before the big day. Since I don't need it the day it comes out, I've placed it atop my GameFly queue. I figure it will be here by the time I'm back from my honeymoon, and then I'll dive right in.

Why am I renting it instead of buying it? I'm not exactly rolling in cash these days, so that's one reason. I also don't play games over once I've beaten them. And lastly: I didn't play a ton of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's multiplayer, and I don't anticipate playing much more in the sequel. I'll be way behind the curve by the time I get back, and I don't feel like being shot in the face repeatedly as I try to catch up. I'll beat this sucker once, and I'm done.

Shoe: My biggest dilemma wasn’t whether to buy this game but rather which version to get. I would like night-vision goggles, yes. What guy wouldn’t? But the Prestige Edition is a little too cumbersome and expensive -- especially for someone who’s not making any money at the moment. The normal edition is the most affordable and would look the best in my game collection. But my need to have a nice collector’s edition for almost anything I buy wins the battle -- so Hardened Edition it is.

Brett: Yes. I've already plunked down my money on Amazon. The first Modern Warfare contained some of the most unforgettable scenes of this console generation, and the perks and upgrades of its multiplayer sucked me in completely. So I've long had the sequel at the top of my "must have" list.

Then the airport footage leaked. That video absolutely blew my mind. It says to me that Infinity Ward plans to use their clout to expand the moral boundaries of video games. For a game as popular as Modern Warfare to deal with this type of content...call me hyperbolic, but I predict that Modern Warfare 2 will be a cultural watershed. And I want to be there on Day One to witness it.

Greg: I won’t be picking up MW2 on Tuesday, no. I just don’t have the time, given school demands. I’m planning as using it as a reward for finishing a couple tests on Thursday, however, and buying it that evening. It’s actually quite similar to how I would have to wait to play a game as a kid -- heck, it’d be practically identical if I had to blow into the cartridge slot to get the damn thing to work.

Demian: I do want to play Modern Warfare 2, but I'm not going to be there with bells -- or night-vision specs -- on right at launch. I'm more interested in the single-player game right now than the multiplayer, so I won't fall behind the curve if I miss Day One. I also want to see how it all shakes out before I decide on Xbox 360 vs. PC. Normally, I'd play it on PC because it's a shooter, but my recent Borderlands experience -- matchmaking is pretty broken on PC, among other things -- combined with the whole dedicated-server issue is giving me pause.

Jason: No. I don't care for first-person shooters, and I have little interest in this game -- especially since it appears that Activision/Infinity Ward are essentially writing off the PC community.

Besides, who needs Modern Warfare 2 when I still have to beat the armored spider in Demon's Souls, want five other origin stories to explore in Dragon Age: Origins, and am anticipating the mods that players will create for the wonderful Torchlight. I sure as hell don't.

Rich: I will not be picking up the game up on Tuesday, because I was able to get it on Friday -- yeah, I'm a cool kid.

Infinity Ward have surpassed the quality and fun of Call of Duty 4. But it won't be long now before CEO Bobby Kotick and Activision bleed this series dry.

Michael: Nope. I don’t fancy army games. Especially ones that are so modern. And have a lot of warfare in them. Oh, and I’m broke, too.

Yeah, I'm not getting it either. I love the first Modern Warfare, but right now I have Dragon Age: Origins beckoning to me. Let me finish it at least once, then maybe I'll consider it.

Ugh! I have already paid off my pre-order of the Hardened Edition... but I have to say my excitement for the game is only at about a 6 out of 10.

I save all year for the holiday games, and this one, even with the number of titles that got pushed back, has convinced me that saving up all year just to buy an overwhelming amount of games is a bit stupid.

I am sure Modern Warefare 2 will be fun, and I cannot wait to check out the first game, but I am so immersed in Dragon Age right now that I think MW2 might stay unopened for a week or two... if I have the patience.

Demian -- matchmaking isn't broken on PC, it's broken in Borderlands.

I'm with Jason. Infinity Ward's attitude towards PC gaming has really turned me off lately, so I don't plan on ever purchasing MW2 brand new.

If my article didn't say it succinctly enough, I won't be picking up this game unless it's in the used game bargain bins in a few years. Not worth my money, especially with renewed interest in games like Dragon Age and Assassin's Creed 2 taking up every spare dollar.

@Rob well yeah, I know, but the level of brokeness of Borderlands on PC is suddenly making me wary of all PC titles in which the PC isn't necessarily the lead platform, especially ones that explicitly don't support dedicated servers.

As someone who is not interested in multiplayer and someone who just spent over $250 dollars on new games in the last 2 months, I have to say that no, I will not be purchasing MW2 on day one. Six hours of a singleplayer campaign that has been soiled by the constant press coverage (thanks for the spoilers) is just not enough....I'm sure that Infinity Ward has some epic things they have done with the game but I have Dragon Age, Forza 3, Borderlands to fill out my holiday season.

Truly, this is the age of sleeper hits.

I am going to be in the minority here but I honestly am not planning on picking up modern warfare 2 at all. Maybe down the road when I can get a dirt cheap copy I'll spring for the single player (the last game was good....a little iffy in some spots for me but it did a lot of fun things and is a very well made shooter.)

I simply have no intrest at all in the multiplayer. I jumped into it late and simply couldn't compete with kill streak getting, perk having, sniper camping, running headshot masters of the game. Call of duty basically replaced halo as the king of console first person mutliplayer shooters. Most of the people playing it now are people who drove me away from liking halo so I doubt I would want to pay 60 dollars to be verbally abused by and beaten by them again. I don't consider call of duty's multiplayer to be balanced or fun and the single player can be waited on.

The rest of you have fun with that.

@Jeffrey-I'll stick with you. I just have no interest in Modern Warfare 2 at all. I can afford it but despite all its improvements, it's just another first-person shooter with a high quality of polish. And I just can't support developers who only talk about amazing graphics as the high point of games. It's a shame so many games got pushed back, I would have more options to choose from.

I'm putting most of my money into coop games to play with my roomy. So I've already got borderlands and I'm getting left 4 dead soon next week. So even as a shooter guy I wont miss modern warfare a bit.

Playing it right now. Have not read any spoilers (hoping to keep it that way, so hush up if you did read them) and hoping single-player is longer on Veteran than 6 hours. I've died twenty times in my first hour, mostly because the stupid new blood splatter effect keeps me from seeing where I'm getting shot from!

I have no interest in this game whatsoever. For the benefit of those who do, Toys R Us has the game + a $20 gift card for $60 between 10 AM and 2 PM today, if you're a rewards member (you can sign up for free.)

I love that these comments had some Dragon Age love! I think that game deserves way more hype than it is getting. My expectations were just mildly excited, but so far it is blowing away most of the other holidays games I have bought so far! Borderlands is close behind, but games like Brutal Legend, Uncharted and Ratchet have not lived up to my hype level.

I actually bought the Prestige edition on PS3 (because I'm a sucker for stupid peripherals like old gen NVG's) and the regular version on PC. My girlfriend thinks I'm crazy and I had to explain to her that since I have more friends on PSN, but the game controls better on PC (and the multiplayer mode on PC this time around is...well...the console version), I'd be doing single player on PC and multiplayer PS3.

I want to play this game eventually, but I'm not dying to play it immediately. The COD franchise is my favorite FPS series, but I rarely get too immersed in the multiplayer that I top-out on ranks. I just get bored with the same shit over and over. And I only play through the single-player campaigns in FPSs once. Plus, I've seriously got to worry about school right now, and get off of BitMob!

Its good but more of the same thing, which I am getting bored with. I am enjoying Dragon Age, but I expect a better quality game from Bioware. The Graphics, lack of your characters voice and the character interaction is a little hallow. Other than that it is still very good game but, it is not on the same level as Mass Effect and KOTOR.

I myself went down to London’s Leicester Square to pick up my copy but not only that, I got my grubby hands on an exclusive ticket to the premier launch from HMV's reward point’s scheme. Hosted by Vernon Kay it was very much a geek's haven with Kevin McKidd, who voices key character ‘Soap’ McTavish in the games, Dom Joly, Goldie and others talking about how much we are geeks and we don’t care, etc.

One of the funniest moments was when Joel Emslie (IW's lead animator as you may know) took us through the first level (and put it on recruit much to everyone’s amusement) but not only that he managed to get himself smacked in the face with the butt of the AI’s gun and died (to much more of everyone’s amusement).

The real highlight of the evening was a six-a-side tournament in which game designer Emslie and a team of Call Of Duty fans (me included) took on Dom Joly, Goldie. Emslie’s team won by a narrow margin but I did manage to kill Joel a couple of times to satisfying groans from the whole audience as they were all watching his screen on the mail cinema screen...

Loads of fun and something I will hold on to for a good while. Quite happily up all night playing multiplayer with all the free energy drinks they were passing out in the queue...every free moment I have has been lost to this game. All that I can say is that I must have a VERY understanding better half!
