Yesterday during the news Blip from Michael Donahoe he posted something about Halo 2. Well I made a comment about any bad news for Bungie is good news for me.

Yes I am not a Halo fan boy and nor do I claim to be a fan boy of anyone other then Rare. How ever I will shed a light on what I meant so we can all have a discussion.

Bungie has been around for almost 20 years which is really impressive. They really taken control of the FPS world with Halo and not that marathon game. How ever the Halo franchise is not what makes them at all. This maybe where you chuckle or laugh, but I am serious though.

In a way I respect Bungie more when I over look the Halo series and all the other stuff they done for the gaming industry. You might think I am wrong, but let me point a few things out before we discuss why Bungie is so big with out even Halo for a game.

One of the most known and talked about things Bungie has going for them some times gets over looked. Bungie was the first to adapt the gamer tag to there site for game updates on everything. With this it brought a whole new dimension to playing a game. For some of us seeing what your friends are playing and able to see your stats live just makes one go all giddy.

For them to be the first developer to do this is saying something. As this was a big risk moment where it was all or nothing for there game. Honestly this could of happened with any game, but we all know that was not going to happen. Other games to follow suit have been Call of Duty: World at War & Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise.

Product merchandise has been around for awhile. Then again so has product rewards like Pepsi Points, Betty Crocker and others. How ever I belive that with the Halo merchandise you collect and you keep the points from that you have been given the chance to gain rewards.

This is not something new, but once this was announced a while ago no one in the game industry was really doing this stuff. If you were sorry I didn't notice becuase you were not doing it like Bungie's Marketing staff did it. Now we see more companies doing this sort of stuff which is great for the loyal fans of the respected companies.

After all said and done if Bungie could make a great game that is not a shooter and not limited to just the Xbox then maybe I will respect Halo more. Since this is how I feel I do respect Bungie and what they have done in the gaming world. I just don't care for the game they made that brought FPS to life when they made Halo.

Toby, you are really trying to anger the gods aren't you!? I completely agree that Bungie has done a lot more for the industry than most developers, yet was it not the popularity of Halo that allowed them to do such things? Marathon was a good game, Oni was not, but it was not until Bungie made Halo that their star started to shine a bit brighter.

I wonder if it is a shooter thing? What is your favorite shooter?

(and please be careful today, for the Bungie gods are fickle, and may seek revenge!)

@Lance I don't have a favorite Shooter. With the popularity of there IP yes it did help manage, but then again it takes skill behind the Ip to do all of those things.

Best recent example great concept for damnation, but the people behind the scenes did not do as good. So in the end it is the people behind the scenes that make it not the IP. 8)

Now if Bungie can make a great game like they did this IP that is not a Shooter then they would be one of few who can break out side a box.

@Toby - I know that Bungie has something new in mind after Halo:Reach, but I don't think they will move too far away from shooters. But, you are right. If Bungie could show their brilliance in another genre, I think they would gain a lot more respect from people who don't like shooters.

Now please be careful of what you write, the Bungie gods are violent and old-school!!!

I am also not a big fan of Halo, but I started loving Bungie when they put out the Myth series of games. At the time, I felt they were truly innovative for the strategy genre. How many other fantasy based RTS games do you know of where it matters that your troops are on the high ground? I'm still hoping for a current-generation sequel to this series.
