This edition of Retro Ads is the first of many "Craziest Commercials" features I'd like to share. Sony's Kevin Butler commercials are the closest thing we have to mad game advertising these days, and this is an absolute shame.

This week we'll take a look at the manic gems of the Atari 2600 era.

1)  Mario Bros.

Mario, where aaaare you? No, seriously....

2) Pitfall

I like that the ad name-drops David Crane for programming. Why don't modern commercials name-drop?

3) Phoenix

Oh, god -- glowing demon birds!

4) Centipede

Is this Centipede or Phantom of the Opera?

5) Ice Hockey

Ice Hockey isn't the most exciting thing ever, but it seems to do it for Phil Hartman. Rest in peace, man.

6) Solar Fox

Can you name the actors in this commercial? One of them should be obvious if you're a connoisseur of eye rolls.

7) Toys 'R' Us

I thought this was an old woman at first.

8) Seaquest

Neptune is a jerk.

9) Pole Position

Muffy, Buffy, and Biff Jr. go for a Sunday drive...of doom.

Join us next week for Nintendo Entertainment System commercials!

I sorta vaguely remember that Mario ad...at least the guy calling out for Mario (wait, is Mario calling out for Mario? I don't get it). But I had no idea that game was out for the 2600!

@Shoe I've only seen a few carts of it in the wild. The game isn't that great, yet resale shops charge an arm and a leg for it

It still pisses me off that Phil Hartman's crazy wife had killed herself instead of him. I miss Hartman and his Simpsons' characeter Troy McClure. The Simspons was never the same without Troy McClure.

I was hoping the Mountain King commercial would find its way into this. But that's due as much to my love of Mountain King as the fact that it's a crazy ad.

Can't believe you missed two of the best Atari songs ever:

"We know deep inside of every man

There's a little boy, an Atari fan,

And without any doubt,

That boy will break out!

And he plays the games of Atari,

Have you played Atari today?"

And to the same melody:

"Berzerk inside an electric maze,

Where robots shoot, with electric rays,

(Take that, turkey!)

Oh look out, don't get trapped,

Or you might get zapped!

Berzerk is here from Atari,

Have you played Atari today?"

Oh Phil Hatman, I still remember that day when I watched the news and learned about his death. A sad day for comedy. He was one of the best.
