Editor's note: Raccoons and armadillos beware when I'm on the range in Red Dead Redemption. Seems like Chase is hunting bigger game, though...or vice versa. -Demian

Until Red Dead Redemption rolled into town in a cloud of dust and hawk feathers, no other game delivered a hunting fix like Oregon Trail 2. Pheasant, buffalo, or that big grizzly, most of my Trail time involved hunting -- it didn’t matter if I had enough meat to last me two trips to Oregon or not.

Cabella’s Big Game Hunter and other shooting-gallery arcade games only satisfied half of my craving. What do you do when your quarry's dead? Nothing? Then what's the point?

So while Red Dead doesn't teach you about the finer points of scurvy, at least in terms of hunting it's the spiritual sequel to Oregon Trail 2 that I've always been looking for. And it has inspired me to recount a few tales of my favorite experiences in the wilds of the Wild West....

Man vs. Cougar(s)

Looking to simultaneously complete a specific Hunter challenge and be completely bad ass at the same time, I was searching for cougars to kill with my knife. Spotting one, I hopped off my horse and stood in a clearing, waiting, watching. The only way I could possibly get the cat’s attention more was if I had a flashing sign above my head reading “Free Eats.”

As the feline approached, we began circling each other, West Side Story-style (“When you’re a Jet you’re a Jet all the way.”)

Just as I was about to lunge headlong into a epic battle between man and beast, a second cougar eviscerated me from behind like a Halo 2 Brute Shot assassination.

I was dead and therefore don’t have first-hand knowledge of what happened next, but I assume the two cougars laughed and danced around on my mutilated corpse. I hate cats.

Man vs. Cougar vs. Wolf Pack

If you asked me which I’d rather face, a cougar or a pack of wolves, it’d be a tough choice. Unfortunately for me I wasn’t given a choice on this occasion.

Hunting for buffalo, I eyed a pack of wolves on the horizon. They seemed to be far enough away to ignore. Looking back down the scope of my rifle, I had one of the wild oxen in my sights.

Then I heard a familiar barking. The wolves, rudely disregarding my earlier calculations that they hadn’t seen me, were charging forth with the clear intention to rend the flesh from my bones.

Trying desperately to switch to my semi-auto shotgun, I heard another familiar sound -- the roar of a cougar, most likely that same jerk from my first tale.

After locating this newest of threats, I stopped in my tracks, dumbfounded by what I saw. The cougar and wolves were running together, in the same pack.

Yes, it was just a coincidence within the game, but I was so impressed by the very idea that I didn’t even mind being torn limb from limb. And then, more than likely, there was more laughing and dancing. I hate dogs now, too.

Sniper Rifle vs. Grizzly

Up in Tall Trees seeking elk, I was trying out the newest sniper rifle I had purchased from Blackwater. I had just made it over a snow-covered hill, when the low groan of a grizzly filled my ears. Immediately turning 180 -- that damn cougar had taught me more often than not, those bastards will be chasing you instead of facing you like a man…er, well…you get what I’m saying -- I pulled up my crosshairs, forgetting for a brief second I had a sniper rifle equipped.

Much to my surprise, I zoomed in to see a very angry bear eye staring back at me. I didn’t think, I just pulled the trigger and let fate decide.

An artist's rendering of the above description.
By the way, I'm the artist. I use that term loosely.

Fate was on my side this day as the next thing I saw was a large, furry carcass at my feet, and some slightly damper pants I would imagine.

Grizzly vs. Stage Coach

By far the scariest of the tales, despite being in the least amount of danger...I had just killed a wild boar and began to skin it. When you skin an animal, a tiny cinematic plays showing you cutting open the fallen prey (for those of you who are squeamish, the worst of it isn’t shown, just some blood spatters that hit the screen.) The point is that you can see behind you as you are skinning.

Well, on this occasion, what do I see but a huge-ass bear licking his lips behind me. Fortunately, when cutting open a fresh kill, you’re less noticeable to roving animals, apparently.

Another artist's rendering. Bears, beats, Red Dead Redemption.

Good news for me, bad news for the passing stagecoach. The bear went after the coach and left me to my work.

Epilogue to Tale #4: I felt bad for the poor stagecoach, so I filled the man-eating monster with enough buckshot to take down three bears. Stupid bears.

Red Dead Redemption offers a ton of things to do: Mexican standoffs, horse breaking, bounty hunting, herb gathering, and many more. But for me at least, "Oregon Trail successor" sold me. And I didn’t even contract dysentery!

Got a favorite hunting story? That's what the comments are for, duh.

I don't remember which oregon trail I played, only that i always failed on the raft level at the end.

Wonderful job at showing some great aspects of this game without spoiling a thing. I've yet to play this but it sounds like Rockstar took a GTA-style game and added equal parts Oblivion and Gun. That sounds f*^*ing great!

When people were tweeting about this game last week, a lot of tweets about cougars were mistaken for comments about middle age women!!!

I'd have a few more of my own tales if my Xbox hadn't red ringed a couple days ago.

@Lance thanks for the kind words sir. I racked my brain trying to think of a joke to make that cougar connection, but it just never felt natural. Though I did see a commercial for that cougar dating site while I wrote this. Made me chuckle.

@Demian ouch. Thankfully, I've only had to go through that once. I guess I'm one of the luckier ones.

Man, this game sounds so great, but I'm not letting myself buy games right now. I have to play three more titles from my backlog before my self-imposed ban ends.

Cool stories.

My favourite part is the poker, but even as a vegetarian I enjoy murdering creatures, skinning them, and then kicking their fleshless corpses. Much more fun than picking flowers.

Great article and those challenges are very addictive. On your tale #4 though, from my experience so far those damn cougars can and will attack you while in your busy work cut scene. Scared the shit out of me when it happened and I only got away because there was an NPC with a rifle close by. Haven't come across any bears yet, but when I do I'll make sure to holster the sniper rifle.

actually,  I was skinning a buck when a cougar knocked me off my feet.

That's my own sharing of my hunting experience actually. Every time I go hunting for bears, as soon as I kill one bear, I've learned to check my six for more. Why? I don't know if it's happened to you, but the bears in my rendition of Tall Trees seem to be pack hunters. Every time I get down to skin one, I'll hear the low moan of another bear approaching. And as soon as I get up (because I was lucky not to get mauled mid-movie) there are now TWO bears to take care of.

To put it another way, I made a status update on my Facebook. I realized then that bears in this game are simply, "homies who might as well be rolling down the block in a Cadillac SUV."

@Matt and @Marcel after further playing, I realize that it is possible to get attacked while in the skinning animation. It actually makes the fourth tale all the more amazing. I'll fix it in the article anyway.

@Alex I love the poker too, but the opponents almost always have good cards. And maybe I'm giving undue credit to Rockstar, but I feel like the AI players have different tendencies. There was one guy who would check-raise me practically every hand. Liars' Dice is the only game at which I consistently win money.

Those damn cougars are the bane of my Red Dead existence. They've killed four of my horses now. One time, I recovered a hijacked cart for a stranger, and as he was thanking me for my services and pulling out his pocketbook, a friggin' cougar leaped onscreen and killed him! No money, no fame/honor. Mission failed.

I got a lot of satisfaction from skinning that particular cougar.

While I like the game and had some fun hunting, I grew tired of it and stopped doing most of the side stuff. The most frustrating thing is collecting a few items only to be killed by a damn cougar and lose everything I just collected. When you see them coming it's not too bad, I actually didn't have any problems with the knife kills. However, when they sneak up on you it's frustrating. They don't always make a sound and they kill the horse with one hit. Once a cougar hit me and I tumbled down a huge hill. I couldn't stop rolling and of course the cougar ran after me, hit me a second time, killing me before I could even stand back up from the first hit. Online a friend and I encountered a lot of cougars in one spot. There must have been at least four of them attacking us at once. We'd spawn nearby after each death too and try to get off a couple shots before dying. It was crazy but also humorous. In single-player I'd be frustrated but online I was laughing quite a bit. It's more fun when you aren't the only person getting mauled over and over.

I love the side challenges in this game. I think I spend more time sharpshooting and hunting than actually playing missions. In fact, I'm sure of it.

This was really funny, Chase. Great captions and I really dug the reference to The Office.

I think I need to spend some more time hunting- I went right for the story missions.

I haven't played a story mission since the second day I had it. I spend much more time doing side missions, hunting, and just riding my horse and exploring. I haven't found a bear or a cougar yet, and I worry that my rifle skills stink too badly for me to properly defend myself (RPG guy isn't good at shooters). Has anyone lassoed a cougar or a bear yet?

@jason, can you use the red eye aiming yet? When you visit Mexico, you will see bobcats, hiding in the grass!

@Jason have you tried the more casual aiming mode? I gave it a shot and ended up really liking it a lot more. It makes hunting a bit too easy, but for human-to-human encounters, I enjoyed the feeling of being a super gunslinger.

I haven't tried lassoing anything bigger than a deer. I was so disappointed when I learned you couldn't ride one...

@Juan and Chase I've figured out my aiming issues...harding to hit things when you're riding a horse than when you're on foot. I tend to do everything on horseback in the game, and riding + shooting is hard for me.
