Puzzler: Identify the backgrounds

Mindjack
Thursday, August 18, 2011

Many older games had plain, single-color backgrounds that made them virtually indistinguishable from one another. This changed as technology got better, and this puzzler tests your attention to detail by presenting levels from different video-game genres. Can you name the titles these stages are from?

1.5/10 (I picked Pokemon, but couldn't say which version). I feel ashamed.

You're a brave man for being honest, but how in the world did you miss #1, #5, and #7?

I went "oh yeah" when I saw the answer for #1. Never actually played 5 or 7 (well, I played the home console version of 7).

Promise me you'll play #5. I'll send you the ROM myself. You're in for a treat, my friend.

I'll make it top priority after I finish Link's Awakening. As the current editor of a major emulation/retro gaming site, I'm sure I'll have no problem finding a copy. ;)

Aw, man. brutal. 4/10

Nice one. My guesses were way off the mark.

You lose a point if you got #10 right. :P

ha! I guessed the Lion King. Do I lose points for thinking 5 was Choaniki? All I could see were penises.

Shit, I'll never enjoy that cave stage again.

9/10. Missed the last one.

Then you win! Jay Henningsen threatened to hurt me for including Shag Fu in this puzzler. By the way, you're a beast, even if any random person can beat you at video games....

I've played Shaq Fu but that's not the stage we used to play on, so it didn't hit me as quickly as that Power Battle one did. I'm shit at games, but I've played everything :P

You'll add another win to your record when we play a fighting game together.

7/10. I feel pretty good about that :)

Lucky 7.

Yikes, I only got #1. Some editor I am! :)

I couldn't forget TMNT if I wanted to....

Next time I'll throw in some MK2 images just for you.

5 out of 10. Not bad. You got me with #6. I kept thinking that it was the eighth in the series.

Jonathan, I thought the same for #6. 3/10. For #7, I said the SNES version. Weak.

I always keep forgetting about  #7, period. To tell the truth, I still have bad memories of Adobo's ugly face.

You use adobo to season food. I think you meant Abobo. :P

Hey, as long as you got the Double Dragon name right, which console version it is isn't that important. Same thing with Mega Man. Image #6 is from the arcade game, but I believe it is originally from MM7's Cloud Man stage. I'll let those slide.

9/10 missed number 4. Yes I got Shaq-Fu *still in plastic*

You got #10!? There's no emoticon for what I'm feeling....

2/10 for me... but I haven't played #3,4,6,8 or 9 :(

Mindjack

Grab a buddy and play #9. It's still a blast to play!

5/10... and I won't lie, 9 was a lucky guess. My friends have been more exposed to that game.

I rented #9 because the box art reminded me of Double Dragon. At first I thought RCR was shit, but it quickly won me over with its fun play mechanic and kick-ass tunes.
